There is nothing more frustrating than getting your AdSense ads well positioned and designed and then having ads served up that have nothing to do with the topic that you’re writing about.
The importance of relevancy
– AdSense is a ‘contextual advertising’ program and when it is working at its best it is highly effective because it serves up ads that are highly relevant to the content on your site – this results (ideally) in a higher CTR (click through rate) (the way I describe it to friends is that if people come to your site looking for information on a particular product they are more likely to click an ad for that product than if they’d come looking for something else that is unrelated to the ad).
The problem is that AdSense doesn’t always get it right when assessing what your content is about and it will from time to time serve up irrelevant ads (although I’ve noticed less problems with this over the past 12 months in comparison to when I started out with AdSense).

I’ve been using Section Targeting for a while and it works well. It is worth noting though, that whenever you update a blog template it can take while for things to settle back down once the AdSense bot has revisited your site!

One other area of importance seems to be the URL. When my sites blog url was sitename.com/blog/ I got many blog ads. Now that I have changed it to my topic, I get only public service ads on the blogs’ home page, indicating there are no ads for the homepage key words. Even with targeting the blog entries only.
If the user reads the single article page, the ads are relevant because those keywords are used in the url.
I will be changing the homepage url once again but I have to wonder what that does to prior search engine archives.

All good advice. I’m surprised that you didn’t mention manually applying a filter to any irrelevant ads that appear. Have to be careful when doing this – use the Preview Tool to get the URL of the ad target.
