How I Make Money Blogging [My Income Split in April 2010]

Today I’m updating the Make Money Blogging page here on ProBlogger – a page where I give a breakdown of how I make money from blogging.

This time I’ve decided to do a snapshot of last month (April 2010). I also thought that I’d put together a bit of a video as well as updating the page – to speak to the different parts of how I make money blogging as well as writing it up.

Here’s the video (created using ScreenFlow – please forgive the slight lag between audio and video).

How I Earn Money Blogging [April 2010 Stats] from Darren Rowse on Vimeo.

For more information you might also want to check up the updated Make Money Blogging page.

PS: Thanks to Tim Jack for the motion graphics intro/outro to the video.

  3. My income source is only Adsense but after reading this article I will look for other revenue sources.

  4. Hello there,

This is truly an inspiration for most of us here. Just one question, do you also make money with CPA promotions? As I cant see it there in the pie or is it included in the term Affiliate?

As for me, I’m doing good with CPA right now. Its a bit frustrating that i have been banned by adsense for no reason, that’s why I shifted my to CPA and concentrate from it.

This is great post Darren, more to come…

  5. You’ve inspired me to pursue writing and marketing e-books with your posts. Generating income that rivals that of your contextual Adsense revenue is quite impressive. Continue the excellent work!

  6. I’m honestly surprised speaking isnt a bigger percentage. I assumed that was a gold mine for search marketing celebs like yourself. I guess adsense really is the best thing ever created for every marketing person out there.

  7. Darren great post on how you make your money online,
there are so many ways, and as you said some work and some dont work,
People think they can make this kind of money from day one, they forget how much work you have to put in to get a business up and running,
    Keep up the good work

    thanks

    Dean

  8. Adsense is great. I am just starting to see decent profits from my campaign and look forward to compounding it over and over again.

  9. Thanks for sharing your income information with us. It’s really interesting as I’m at a stage where I am seriously thinking about monetisation.

  10. Hey Darren, that’s a very informative video. Well done.

Truthfully I am surprised that blogs can make that kind of money. I guess I need to re-evaluate the importance of blogs and start implementing some monetizing strategies.

    Thanks,
    Mike

  11. I have tried Amazon for two years now on and only get one commission out of thousands of visits. I stay with adsense that has proved to be a reliable source of income.

  12. blogging is a good starting point in seo, but you should still promote with ppc as it is the fastest way to start making money straight away.

  13. Great to see your cost breakdown.

I really wasn’t expecting to see Adsense as your No.1 !

  15. Hi Darren,
Wow, i didn’t realize that so much went into monetizing your business. As a newbie i am inspired by you, the way you blog. Its all new to me but i must say that i haven’t had this much fun in years.
    Thank you
    Pete

  16. Hey Darren, I never had any luck with adsense, I lost more than I made from it, so that was the end of that money making journey, I have started blogging now and I find that it suits me and I like it, plus it’s cheaper than adsense ha ha, thanks for sharing your information so honestly, it makes a refreshing change, Sally :)

Thats amazing that you can generate an income blogging. I really need to get a move on and start my own “Elvis Kovacic” blog and write a whole heap of stuff and make some easy cash. I guess its not that easy but easier than most other jobs hey?!

  18. I am surprised that adsense is on 1st place. I am new in blogging and here from you there is lot’s of things to learn. Thanks!

  19. You earn really good money keep it up
    Darren..
you earn 23% from adsense thats good..

  20. In december 2009 i decided to start making money online and never be obligated to take a JOB… It took me a while to study ppc, viral marketing, video marketing, but a week ago i made my first sale online. I was septic at the beginning when i saw Fast Track Cash but after a internet marketer i was follow recommended it to my i wanted to take a try… If you are in the same condition as i was don’t hesitate… Go to my site and see a little video that will prove what i say.

  21. interesting income breakdown and it helps. and im going to start that on mine blog http://www.ways2market.com

    thanks Problogger <3 u

  22. The Internet has done so many positive things in the life of countless individuals. It has made a number of people into multi-millionaires, and it made the lives of everyone a lot more convenient. We now conduct a lot of our affairs through the World Wide Web and it seems that it’s hard to go through life without it.

  23. I haven’t quite managed to get on the front page of google yet by blogging, but Adsense is a good way to get there in very little time without any advertising.

  24. Hey Darren,

Thank you for sharing your experiences earning from your blog. I’m writing a short article for my Swedish fellow small entrepreneurs about why it’s a good idea to have an updated blog.

I can see that AdSense and Affiliates are almost 50% of Problogger’s total revenue in April. That’s an almost passive income you’re getting while doing other things.

This is what I want to explain for the hard working small business owners. They can add another income stream that will work well for them.

    Thank you again

  25. I love reading this blog. I have just started a blog and hope that I can eventually make a part time and even full time earning from working online.
I enjoy reading your posts and this gives me hope and inspiration for my blog.

  26. This is inspirational for me. I wonder how you made soo much of traffic.

  27. On June 11, 2010, the world will welcome the arrival of one of the biggest football carnivals of the year, when 32 of the best teams will compete for one goal: FIFA 2010 World Cup. The sight will be the beautiful South Africa. It is going to be watched throughout the world. If you wish, you can even watch FIFA World Cup Online here.

  28. Wow… nice overview and breakdown. I’m currently working towards the same direction as you. I just hope that I can achieve at least 5% of what you have accomplish. It seems that adsense, affiliates and ebooks covers a large portion of the income.

  29. My online revenues are still very far away from your online income. But at least your exposure in the breakdown how you make money from blogging can give encouragement to me.

I want to share this story. Yesterday I saw a screenshot of adsense income of a member on digitalpoint forum that reaches the amount of $ 400 a day. Wow, really encouraging to me. Keep on smart working!

  30. Great post Darren. I was particularly impressed with the ‘throwaway comment’ “I still make a six figure income from blogging, although that’s probably heading to a seven figure now”.

Brilliant, video thanks for sharing your tips.

  31. Top Work!… :]

  32. Hi Darren,

I bought your ebook and your 2nd edition Book. I have enjoyed reading both and am looking to apply what I have learned on my own blog quest.

I just set up my website, TheBlogQuest.com where I am documenting my journey of becoming a professional blogger.

Thanks for making all this great info available. – Jason

  33. Wow amazing. I never knew that adsense is the winner.

  34. Darren

    How are you?

    Thanks for sharing

When people ask me how I plan on making a living, I tell them I am building a 5 leg stool (one leg breaks, you don’t fall on your face), i see from the graph that yours has 9 legs, even ‘safer’ I guess.

  35. wow, your earnigs are awesome , i hope on day i will earn a 10% of the total amount you earn.

  36. Well, it’s no surprise that Adsense ranks number one when it comes earning money from your blog.

I wish I could earn much in Adsense. In my case, it takes years for me to reach the minimum payout (guess I need to do a lot practicing and learning)

  37. Darren (or commenters/readers)– Has anyone ever tried to auction off ad placements on their blog? Lets say a blog has 5 direct ad spots (above & below the fold) and 12 advertisers expressing interest. I’m wondering if an “auction” for the spots would generate more income vs. a “first come, first served” kind of thing. Comments?

  38. Congrats dude, You have earned good income

  39. How many years have you been blogging? How much $ were you making just 5 years ago?

  40. Most of the bloggers think that Adsense is the only way to earn money and you proved thats completely wrong. And your earnings are pretty impressive. great going

  41. Thanks for the breakdown.

I have just seen your site, just like to say thanks for taking the time to explain how to setup a good blog.

    Best regards

  42. You’re totally right on all blogs are different as far as income generation, most of my income comes from Affiliate program and Ebook but to see your Adsense income I’m very amazed by your number.

  43. Wow, this really open up new views on ways to monetize the blog beside using google, thanks for the info, just wondering if anyone had try buysellads.com ? I’m planning to use them in near future (not enough page hits to apply currently)

  44. My number One … ADSENSE :))

  45. Hey Darren, since I’ve been blogging the most of my income (very little) comes from adsense

Did you ever experience that for an small traffic blog (around 100) adsense tends to work very well
(running several blogs but the travel ones are the one that bring profits)

    Congratulation in your continuous achievement

  46. I have always enjoyed reading some of your ideas Darren. You put alot of things into perspective for those wanting to get started in blogging.

  47. Hi Darren,

    Thanks for this excellent video.

Traffic is much more of a priority right now than monitization as I am just starting up. However, like many others that have commented here I was also under the impression from the research that I had done that Adsense was generally not such a big income generator.

Your disclosure that Adsense works well on DPS and not on PB is invaluable to me as I hadn’t considered before now the subtleties of different types of monitization depending on the style of blog.

Anyway, thanks again. I shall look forward to your future posts.

    Rob.

  48. Hi Darren, you have inspired millions without knowing!

  49. Once we realize that posting daily, interacting with other blogs, commenting and leaving backlinks truly is effective in bringing traffic to our own blog, we begin to treat it like a job. We write our posts, schedule their publishing, create Google Alerts and monitor them in Google Reader, in order to be updated whenever other blogs in our niche post similar topics. This way we can link to those blogs and say something relevant in order to become categorically recognized as authority blogs.

  50. Hi Darren, Money is best when it comes in passively. I liked your breakdown of your earnings, just goes to show how big affiliate marketing is.

    Thanks Darren
