Google Add Socialize Feature to Feedburner – Tweet Your New Blog Posts from Feedburner

Posted By Darren Rowse 15th of December 2009 RSS, Social Media 0 Comments

Google today announced a new feature that impacts bloggers – a new URL shortener that integrates with Feedburner and a new ‘socialize’ feature on Feedburner.

This allows bloggers to use Feedburner to send Tweets out automatically via Feedburner.

Of course most bloggers already have tweets going out to promote new blog posts by using either a plugin or a service like TwitterFeed.

Feedburner give you a number of options – including the ability to tweet out just the title or include some of the body (or only the body), adding hashtags (based upon your category), adding something before or after the title, filtering (to stop some new posts going out) – and limiting how many tweets go out.

In many ways it is pretty similar to what a lot of the other alternatives give you for this type of thing – but it is good to be able to have it all managed from one account. I’ll also be interested to see how Google/Feedburner integrate this into their Analysis/metrics (ie to see if they can measure clicks on their URL shortened links accurate – I’m not seeing any mention of this but it would seem like a logical extension).

  1. It’s pretty interesting how fast online marketing is changing. I wonder how much longer blogs will be around…

  2. That’s my main concern. I am going to use it, as it really helps automate my Twitter usage at night when I have my new posts scheduled, but the main reason I use Hootsuite to begin with is because I can see the number of end-user clicks in any way I want.

If Google doesn’t do something like that soon, I’ll be amazed. I just hope it is that–soon.

But then again, I cannot really think of a time Google’s let me down in the past, so I am sure they’ll pull through.

Oh, and kudos on getting this link-through on Twitter using goo.gl. Sneaky!

  3. Wohh this is very exciting news .. Looking forward to use it and see how it works. Thanks for the heads up

  4. Interesting. Myself, not having an extremely high number of RSS subscribers, have not yet opted for an automatic Twitter-update solution when I publish new posts. I do it manually since I believe that people will see an appeal in every tweet being different and written by a human. Then again, I might just be naive.

However, I do see this as an attractive option for the sake of enhanced statistics together with Feedburner. More numbers to juggle are of course a bloggers bliss. Future case studies of this feature will be interesting to read.

  5. I use the “Additional Text” field to add a hashtag at the end of the Tweet (#Chargers) – it works perfectly ;)

  6. Have not seen this yet…Looking forward to see how far Google with take it with analytics part.

  7. I prefer doing it the old fashioned way.

  8. I’m still Tweetless in Seattle, but I’m thinking I better join the band, mate.

I’m glad to see the progressive integration of social media tools — it’s an exciting landscape.

  9. Wow this is amazing news! I love it will save so much time.

Also who loves the google short URL? goo.gl? hahah :D

  10. Fantastic! Bloggers will be blessed by this new feature! What a wonderful idea from Google. Again, with all the new features why would we want to go to Bing or anyone else?

  11. So this might sound silly, but can I get some opinions on this… I don’t twitter about my blog posts because someone told me or somewhere I read that you shouldn’t do that as it is too much “self-promotion”… that tweets should be useful, etc etc etc… so I wait for others to tweet about the post, and i save my tweets for other things. Bad idea? Good idea? What do you think?

  12. I have been worried that Twitter would shut down the rss feeds into their system but this looks like it’s here to stay with Google getting involved.

  13. I will soon move to feed burner for auto publishing….till now i have been using an API..Anyways thanks for this useful information…

  14. Thats why we love google and hate it too as it doesnt sit idle and keep adding new features to its product unlike microsoft etc which stay idle until someone else rocks their boat.

Its a great feature addon for feedburner.

  15. Right now I use the WP to Twitter plugin for WordPress which works great. I’d love to go “all Google”, but one feature they need to add before I do, is the ability to add text to the beginning AND end of the tweet, instead of just either or.

  16. Really? That’s cool, and I’m kind of laughing because I was thinking of TwitterFeed – then there it goes =P

So which would you recommend using? Is there any real difference from TwitterFeed?

  17. If this is better than Tweetmeme or Twitterfeed or even SU.Pr then maybe it would help but if its the same then why bother at all?

  18. I like this idea, I have been using twitterfeed in the past and think it offers a great service for what I want it to do but think that Google has stepped it up another level. I am wondering how much Google are going to dominate with more and more tools for “professional” bloggers

  19. Google is only available to update your feed to twitter, but twitterfeed is also available to update feed to hellotxt and ping.fm. And google only offers one short url services, but Twitterfeed offers many. I have no reason to transfer twitterfeed to google feedburner socialize.

  20. good, as a hobby of bloger, we should focus on the terms of google time to time.

  21. This seems to be a slap In the face to twitter Google Url Wont even let us try the service out.

I’m a bit skeptical about this service.

  22. You can’t use Goo.gl service in order to generate shorten URL. This service is only available through Google Toolbar & Google Feedburner.

  23. Makes no sense unless you can track your clicks. Replacing a service like bit.ly (just to name one) with this makes no sense. And there’s no point in using both. Just a way for big G to get even deeper into our own online presence? Just a way to link your Google/Feedburner profile with your Twitter account? Possible…

  24. Great to see Google finally supporting Feedburner again! This sounds like a really useful improvement to its tool set.

  25. This is really very good news for us, We can broadcast our post to all twitter followers. Thank you google.

  26. I do already have my systems set up to automatically tweet my blog entries, but I suppose if Feedburner had had this feature when I set my account up, I would have used it. I do really like posting my blog post titles as tweets. I think it gives good value to my readers.

  27. I have been tweeting my posts via bit.ly because I tweet them several times a day.

I’m sure there are better ways and if anyone has suggestions I’m open.

    Thanks.

  29. Interesting to see the Google URL shortening service. I wonder when it will be more widely available and what type of analytics it will support. I suspect they will transition their “Send to” feature of the Google Reader off of bit.ly soon too.

    Great feature for Feedburner.

  30. Thanks for your sharing.
I prefer doing it the old fashioned way.

    I agree with it.

  32. This is a good update, google is getting itself integrated with all kinds of other applications, i hope to make most out of this new service

  33. Great features, and i think i should have twitter after this.

  34. Man…you must have been reading my mind! I was just thinking about how I am going to feed my posts to Twitter…and what a great feature!

    Thanks so much!!

  35. This is pretty awesome. Way better than Twitterfeed, and of course it is nice to consolidate.

  36. This is a welcome feature, but how after you post will it tweet?

Feedburner already takes a while to show up on my RSS feed.

  37. Thanks for giving this update. Actually I used feed burner of Google ads in many of my blogs so I think this feature really gonna help me out to improve ..

  38. I’m loving this! Thanks so much!!

  39. Interesting news. Let’s have a look at some developments recently happening in the search market:

    1) Twitter emerged as a social media in which you could conduct real-time search.

    2) Some search engines including Google, offered remarkable prices to buy Twitter, but it wasn’t for sale.

    3) Bing, Yahoo and Google have entered into deals to return real-time search as published inside Twitter.

    4) Feedburner, a former company bought by Google, is set to help all bloggers as website owners integrate URL shortening feature to tweet!

    Part of the Conclusion:
Real-time search and fresh content marketing is becoming so important that search giants like Google invest on them. Google even shows up the most recent news, images, videos, blogs, social media updates, etc when you click on its “Show Option” feature. So, let’s focus on “Fresh Content” in the coming year.

  40. Darren,

Thanks for the update. That is really a good news as this would cut down on one of my external service that I use to auto-tweet my posts to twitter.

Feedburner will be my tool now to auto-tweet. Thanks again :)

  41. This is a great news.I will try to use this.

  42. thanks, seems srt8 forward..will give this a try

  43. I usually don’t post comments but I just began using twitter and I am a little lost. Thank you for clearing some information for me. Looking forward to your next entry.

  44. Im just getting started down this road, the journey is going to be long, but my target is two years to have a full time income online and to be able spend more time with my family instead of going for a 9 to 5 job..

  47. I do think twitter is a killer app. A perfect complement to blogging. I tweet all the time and I’m pretty sure I’m addicted :)

  48. this integration of apps is awesome, just made it more manageable and easy. no more multiple accounts just to widen your followers/readers

  49. As always nice article, thanks for that. I managed to set up a blog, too, now. Your work inspired me. ;)
