Want to maximize sharing of your content on Facebook? Here are seven tips that are sure to help.

1. Publish on the weekend

Many companies block Facebook access from the office, so sharing of stories on Facebook tends to increase over the weekend. Experiment with publishing your stories on Saturday and Sunday.

2. Dig deeper into the news

Why” and “how” rank among the commonest words in the titles of most-shared blog posts. Facebook users want to get beyond the soundbite headline. They’re also fans of list-based superlatives like “best” and “most.”

3. Include specific digits

Just as Facebookers want to get beyond the headlines, they also like specific numbers. Articles with digits in them do better on Facebook than articles without them.

4. Don’t be a social media dork

Unlike Twitter users, most Facebookers are into social media for social media’s sake, they’re not social media dorks. “Google,” “iPhone,” and “Twitter” rank among the least shareable words.

5. Write simply and plainly

As the complexity of an article increase, the degree to which it gets shared on Facebook decreases. The same holds true for flowery language replete with adjectives and adverbs. Pick up a copy of The Elements of Style to help refine your writing.

6. On Facebook, sex and positivity sell

It may seem obvious, but it’s true: content with a sexual edge does well on Facebook. Of course not every brand can play that game, but there is another useful story in this data. Articles that are positive do better than negative ones.

7. Include video

Because Facebook has features that allow for easier and more engaging video sharing, articles that include videos tend to do very well on Facebook. On Twitter, not so much.

  1. Love the tips. Can’t wait to test these out for myself.

  2. These are some great tips, I’m going to test some of these out! Thanks!

  3. Great post! I have just started out as a blogger, so this should really prove useful I hope :)

  4. thanks.. its really helpful :) i wish my blog has far reaching effect on my friends atleast, most of them being active on facebook :)

  5. It seems like sticking with the basics is a can’t lose formula. keeping things simple and paying attention to detail.

  6. I cannot figure out how to tell if posts have been shared. I only see stats on likes. Can anyone help me out? Sorry if that’s a dumb question. I would line to encourage more sharing but want to see if it’s working or not!

  7. I truly believe that people are stay longer on videos than reading the whole article. So in my opinion, video posting share much faster than articles. Great job on this site.

  8. I tend to agree with the assessment by Mr. Niall Harbison. I think sometimes we over-think problems and solutions. What ultimately matters is whether the content is liked by the audience. If they don’t like it, they won’t share it no matter what strategies and tactics you try.

Time of day strategy expressed elsewhere seems a little nonsensical to me. We are talking about the Internet that spans many time-zones worldwide! It’s not like telemarketers calling you at supper time – there they are calling you at the local time for supper!

I’ve had video marketing sent to me that I close after about 10 seconds – doesn’t matter how much time, effort and money they spent on it – if the content is not appealing to me, it gets shut down.

I use Google Analytics and Facebook Insights to gauge the appeal of my website pages. It is interesting to see what is more appealing, more liked/shared and by which demographic.

  9. This is a very interesting article. I began posting on weekends and have been surprised by the good response that I get. I’ll have to look and see if and how that might connect with Facebook shares. That’s contrary to what most bloggers say, but I think it depends so much on your niche.

I didn’t understand the graphics in this article. And I wasn’t quite sure what “digits in the article” meant. Does it mean in the headline or in the article itself.

    Thanks for these helpful tips.

  10. Interested post – I haven’t really done anything wrong but I always thought early in the week would be better so I post on Tuesday. Maybe I should switch to Saturday? Although I do update my status to include info about the blog post throughout the week maybe end of the week is better…hmmmm some thought.

  11. Thank you Dan for this great post! As a newbie blogger this is definitely gonna help me out.

  12. Practical and effective. Thanks for this

I definitely agree that Facebook loves sex and positivity! That’s funny.. I never heard it put that way before, but it’s true!

  13. I’ve been using “how” a little more in blog titles. I think it does work.
Plain language with short paragraphs tend to work too.
Most important of all from my experience is to write authentically and “on the fly”

  14. These are some great tips. I plan on using more videos on my blog posts. I look forward to seeing how that helps. I think I’ll also post up more on the weekends..that is a very interesting fact. Good to know.

    thanks

  15. Thinking about it now, it seems obvious that weekend posts would have more shares. Will definitely try to play around with that. Thanks for the tips.

  16. Wonderful post. As a full-time freelance writer with over 20 years experience in the industry, I have
been searching for new ways to fill the void left by the shrinking print publishing market. I only began
blogging in September but am already thrilled with the feedback and results. I am still on the learning
curve of mastering the techniques needed to bump up traffic. Your site and this posting are extremely helpful and I will be checking in regularly to keep abreast of new trends. Thanks so much!!!

  17. I completely agree with the last one. If I see “video” on Twitter, I am not very likely to click on it vs in Facebook.

I’ve heard from almost everyone with a Twitter and Facebook business account that their audiences respond very differently and relate very differently to their businesses.

  18. Excellent tips !! I luv it

  19. I think the sharing on a weekend tip not only applies to Facebook but also your blog, less people post at the weekend, as a lot of buiness blogs do the Mon-Fri 9-5 thing.

I’m trying to make sure I post every weekend now as there is less for people to read out there at that time, and of course sharing it with Facebook :) Thanks for the post, good information!

  20. These tips were great. Thank you so much for sharing. I am going to have a “positive video that shows the why and how and keep it simple” :) That is actually a really good sentence for me to remember when I am recording my videos. Thanks again!

  21. This are really insightful tips. I have tried especially posting articles on facebook over the weekend and the impact is marvelous in comparison to weekdays. Thank you.

  22. Good tips and thanks for the info.

  23. Some good ideas!

  24. Digits? What do you mean by digits? Just throw some numbers in my post, is that what you mean? There is probably some sound data here, but the descriptions under your topics really are vague and need some fleshing out. You may have taken the ‘Write simply and plainly’ advice a little to far.

  25. Thank you for the great advice! This is something that I have been wondering about for a long time. I look forward to taking these tips for a test drive. :)

  26. Great post! Lots of useful information. Thanks for sharing what you’ve discovered.

  27. Landed here searching -“find who shared your posts on facebook”. Really have to appreciate the time and effort you’ve put in doing statistical research on each of these ways and finding out the best possible combinations and keywords that are shared the most on Facebook. These tips are a great help to me and I’m looking forward to put them into practice from now on. Thanks for sharing ☺
