Is Bloglines having Issues

Posted By Darren Rowse 24th of February 2006 Pro Blogging News 0 Comments

My apologies once again to readers who use Bloglines to follow ProBlogger but unfortunately it seems my feed has been out of action for the last day or two – again. As I look down my own list of blogs that I follow using Bloglines I notice that the little red exclamation mark that signifies an error is on almost 1 in 10 of the feeds I’m following. Looks like they have some ‘issues’.

Yesterday I asked them to restart my feed (again) but no word yet on what they’re up to.

If you have missed my last few days posting you can get most of the main articles I’ve written from the Blogging for Beginners page.

update: a comment below from a representative from Feeburner claims that the issue is at there end. They write:

‘Bloglines has experienced errors while attempting to retrieve recent posts from FeedBurner feeds. These errors take 24 hours to automatically clear. FeedBurner knows about the problem and is working to resolve the issue. Thank you for your patience.’

I’m a bit perplexed by it all to be honest. Last week when this happened I had emails and comments from both Feedburner and Bloglines claiming that the other was at fault and I ended up not knowing what to do about it except hope that one of them could work it out.

I guess if the problem persists then unfortunately I’ll have to move on from Feedburner. I could change my news aggregator but that might only solve my reading problems and not help any ProBlogger readers.

All I know is that my RSS readership has dropped by 2000 readers in the last couple of day , that comment levels are down under half normal and that I’m getting a lot of emails from readers who are frustrated. Not a very pleasing thing when I’m putting so many hours into my current series of posts and am finding that so many readers don’t even know it’s on.

  1. Hey Darren, how did you get your logo in the bloglines display?

  2. From memory – I think it’s something Feedburner does.

  3. Thanks Darrren for taking the time to answer my question, I know you’re a busy guy!!

  4. Yes, or either it’s Feedburner. I was about to email you again about it. Given every single other feed works ok in Bloglines today I’d be pointing the finger straight at feedburner personally, if they cant fix it, drop them, or alternatively give me your non feedburner feed address so I don’t have to type Problogger into Firefox :-)

  5. Bloglines having problems again

Darren Rowse wonders whether Blogines is having problems again. He’s finding an error on almost 1 in 10 feeds he’s following. LexBlog has hundreds of lawyers and professional services business clients which it empowers to be effective bloggers via RS…

  6. I’ve got to tell you. There’s at least one other Feedburner feed not updating in Bloglines and that’s mine.

  7. Hi Darren, Did you check the issue with FeedBurner.com feeds cause sometimes the feeds cannot handle special characters and also it’ll show you error when your feed is updated or changed. It happened last time when my posts has special characters(copoyright sign, trademark sign etc), the feedburner feed was unable to render it.

  8. Bloglines isn’t rendering properly for my site either. However, I checked the Feedburner XML to see if anything was going wrong on their end – the feed validators all came through saying everything was okay. They did throw some warnings up about some readers not liking embedded objects inside RSS content.

Recently we posted a YouTube video, and the embedded object gets added into the feed because it’s part of the post. Ever since then, Bloglines has been throwing an error with retrieving the feed. So if I had to guess, Bloglines is _really_ picky about what it receives, and this is probably not on purpose since most other readers, either display the content or simply ignore content they can’t display.

I sent them an email about it today, so no word yet… but I’ll let you know.

  9. Bloglines has experienced errors while attempting to retrieve recent posts from FeedBurner feeds. These errors take 24 hours to automatically clear. FeedBurner knows about the problem and is working to resolve the issue. Thank you for your patience.

  10. […] Feedburner problems Please note that at the time of writing those using The Cartoon Blog FeedBurner feed along with Bloglines are experiencing some problems in that the combination isn’t working. This has been going on for a few days on this and other blogs. I’m hanging on a day or two before ditching Feedburner altogether, but hopefully it will improve soon. […]

  11. […] If you subscribe to these feeds in Bloglines, you will see a red exclamation mark [!] next to the subscription. It also looks like that I am not the only one noticing this. Feed owners are complaining in the FeedBurner forum. Also check out Darren Rowse post which mentions that FeedBurner claims that the issue is at there end. […]

  13. I’m subscribed to the ff: ProBloggers feeds and I don’t get any errors in Bloglines:

  14. I’m subscribed to:

and not thru the Feedburner link and I still get the same errors in Bloglines.

  15. 19 articles from ProBlogger suddenly came through all at once – maybe the dam has broken?

  16. I also had problems with Bloglines. More than 10 Percent of the feeds I subscribed to showed up with a FeedError(49) within Bloglines. Those RSS files could be opened without problems in the browser. My own feed (managed by Feedburner) was out of time for 4 days. Feedburner (http://forums.feedburner.com/viewtopic.php?t=3046) told: We have no problem.

I reported to Bloglines but got no answer so far (“allow 2 workdays…”). But now suddenly almost all subscribed feeds show up fine with all posts of the last days (so your feed does) …

BTW: Do they work on a new beta at bloglines? I got requests with referer at beta.bloglines.com (authorization required)?

  17. […] For some time now, Bloglines has been experiencing errors while attempting to retrieve posts from FeedBurner feeds. Marc commented about this on my post about Feedburner and b5’s Problogger wrote, more than a month ago, that FeedBurner knows about the problem and is working to resolve the issue. Meanwhile the problem is still not solved… Today I read a post on wirecatcher.com who writes about the fact that Bloglines and FeedBurner aren’t exactly willing to work with each other on the issue. Het got some emails from support teams which said “That’s FeedBurner’s problem” or “That’s Bloglines’ problem.” Not very professional you would think but I was surprised to see that Bloglines AND Feedburner commented on that post. Both Dick Costolo (”Nobody at FeedBurner should ever blame anybody else for an issue you’re having.”) and Paul Querna (”I am an Engineer from Bloglines, and I would like to help resolve this problem.”) tried to help, very good! You should think that it won’t take long now to solve this issue, let’s hope so… This entry was posted on Tuesday, March 7th, 2006 and is filed under In the media.
