Have a 37 Minute Coffee Break with Me [Audio Interview]

Posted By Darren Rowse 10th of February 2010 Miscellaneous Blog Tips 0 Comments

If you have a spare 37 minutes today to grab a coffee with me (or at least are doing something that will allow you to listen to something for 37 minutes in the background) check out this interview I did with Robb Sutton late last week. Robb’s also transcribed it for those who prefer to read.

In the interview Rob asks me about a whole range of stuff including:

  • my background in blogging
  • my philosophy on lots of sites vs focusing upon a single (or just a few) sites
  • the process of going full time (and my wife’s six month ultimatum)
  • my shift in focus to e-books and membership sites
  • a little about Third Tribe
  • finding readers for a blog
  • my best advice for new bloggers
  • a number of more personal questions like, favourite, food, drink, about the car I drive, the brand of camera I use

Hope you find the interview interesting.

  1. Darren: I’m going to listen to the podcast. But just outta curiosity (and I know I’m cheating here)…what was the ultimatum?

Look forward to listening to the podcast.

  2. Very interesting podcast Dareen … I have just glanced my eyes at the transcribe of it … Would take some time during the day to have it listened.
    Thanks for sharing

  3. I tried to have a break last night listening to your conversation with the other guy in third Tribe but after 12 minutes I gave up. If it’s going to be the same empty content, boring, friends chit-chat, self promotion thing I’m not sure I want to take that break.

Think of me as a loyal reader that is starting to feel disappointed.

    • Guillermo – sorry you feel that way. The chat with Brian did start with my story of blogging. it’s a bit of a challenge to know how to share that differently as people do ask me about it every interview I do. I’m aware many have heard it before but some have not. I’m not sure I can really justify making up news stuff to answer that question as it’s what actually happened :-)

The interview with Brian (and this one with Robb) did get onto new ground as the interviews went along but I guess as someone who has journeyed with me for a while you’ll have heard the beginning stuff before. Not sure what to suggest except to skip the first few minutes!

  4. Thanks again for the interview opportunity Darren. I hope your readers get as much out of listening (or reading) to it as I did conducting it.

  5. Well I bet an interview with Darren can lead to plenty of traffic and exposure, maybe I’ll plan to interview some famous for my blog. Brand Darren has got a huge followership on the internet.

  6. will check it out :-)

  7. Very interesting interview. It’s always great to hear the background behind successful bloggers, especially the things they feel they’ve done right and wrong along the way. I think it’s nice for people that are just starting out to know that everyone makes mistakes, and that they are all learning experiences…

  8. LOL… Darren… Just got done listening to the Interview… It was great… It really gives a little more insight into you as a person… A minister? Really? It totally makes sense as to why you are unofficially labeled one of the nicest bloggers out there…

    That’s great info… Thanks…

    • Brian – glad you found it useful. Yep – I was a minister in one form or another for 10 years (mainly youth and young adults work). I’m not sure that the ‘nice blogger’ label comes from that or just who I am. I do try to be a good person.

  9. “a little about Third Tribe”
I’m not take over for it, should it work for our network?

  10. Just spent the last 37 minutes doing about 5 minutes work! That’s what you get when you tell yourself you can do some work with it in the background!

Still, it was worth the dip in productivity in my opinion :)

  11. I enjoyed your interview…I am hoping that I am going to get enough time to refine my blog so I can get to independence from the workforce. Blogging is fun…and right now its more planing than blogging. I am hoping I will get to the point that where I can get that six months to give it a full time try…

  12. Darren,

Thanks for the interesting audio, a real benefit for new bloggers. Also for people who have had some level of success also.

    Much appreciated.

  13. Hi Darren,

I have read your personal story here on this blog, your livingroom blog as well as now in the interview, and it touches me as a reader to see how much time, blood and sweat is gone in building the brand which you have built so successfully over the years. I really like your honesty as a blogger which gives kind of comfort to me that I am not following advice of someone who is talking just because he wants to sell something to me in the end, but of someone who really cares for me, as a reader.

    Hats off to you!

  14. Know you Darren, I am sure the content is going to be fantastic. Heading over now to check it out.

  15. Would love to have this one on my this weekend.

  16. I really enjoyed this entry. Real interesting and informative

  22. lolol where is a dark beer whenever you need one

  23. Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbour were preparing to do some research about that. We got a good book on that matter from our local library and most books where not as influensive as your information. I am very glad to see such information which I was searching for a long time. This made very glad!
