One of the things that I enjoy about this time of year is that the search engines release reports on what the most searched for words were during the past 12 months. Google just released their Google Zeitgeist 2007 Report (Yahoo did their one last week).
At Google the fastest growing terms globally were:
1. iphone
2. badoo
3. facebook
4. dailymotion
5. webkinz
6. youtube
7. ebuddy
8. second life
9. hi5
10. club penguin
There’s plenty more in the report though – food for thought as you’re looking at popular topics to write about.
a few of those I haven’t even heard of. Guess I’m out of the loop :)
more data to ponder :)
People don’t mess around when it comes to their Webkinz. No surprise in being in the top ten search terms.
Social Media terms dominate the rankings…its interesting to see second life too in the list…are people too lonely that they find solace with those fake avatars online….well don’t know but one thing is for sure…the great social media buzz is here to stay!!!
I’m very surprised at the difference between Google’s and Yahoo’s… it looks like only celebrity gossips use Yahoo or something :)
Anything outside of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton and I’m a happy geek :-)
Isn’t it funny how different sites gain and lose in popularity. Facebook is a good example. The other social sites were up there for a time and not so much now or at least they are running behind facebook.
I can vouch for the popularity of Second Life as a search term – huge majority of my traffic comes from people typing Second Life-related terms into Google…
Interesting list! I haven’t heard of a couple of those either, guess I’ll have to search to find out what they are… :)
This is good information. Definitely something to keep in mind!
I am not a big enough fish to draw search results on these Zeitgeist items, but I have been getting lots of traffic on keywords “Gingerbread Train” in recent weeks over at Grill’n Time. I am on the page one results of Google with this combination of keywords. I love riding the long tail. Yeah Ha!!!
Since search engines (like the Googles and Yahoos) are so generic, their Zeitgeist search words are generic too. I prefer Zeitgeists on a category basis (e.g. automotive, gadgets, gossip, style, …) like is shown here on a search service based only on quality content from the blogosphere:

Never heard of Badoo, going to check that one out
Thx
Did you see the losers? They show what not to blog about:
world cup, mozart, fifa, rebelde, kazaa, xanga, webdetente, sudoku, shakira, and mp3.
Also, I’m glad we have Google Trends these days instead of just Zeitgeist.
I can vouch for Club Penguin. My Son and most of his friends have been on it for a couple of years now. The site is a social networking site for children. The developers created It to be safe and ad free. They make money from membership sign ups. Actually, they made their money from selling to Disney (millions of dollars). The developers live not far from where I am in Canada. It’s an amazing story of some genuine web entrepreneurs. All around good people, too.
I had to go look up badoo, dailymotion and ebuddy. I had never heard of them before. lol.
