Community Discussion: Your One Thing for 2017

At the ProBlogger event on the Gold Coast last year, Darren motivated us all with his rallying cry to find one thing we want to do with our blogs, businesses, and lives. Just one thing that we would prioritise, measure all things against, and work hardest at among all the other things that take up our time.

I’m still considering my one thing. I thought I’d have 2017’s figured out by now, but I don’t. Last year for me was “get back to my roots” – blogging had changed, and mine was no exception. But I wanted to get back to where it all started, what the passion was for me, and that was food and storytelling. So getting back to my roots was my One Thing.

This year I’ve a few ideas about what it can be, but I’m letting them marinate in the background, knowing that when the time is right the answer will appear. And then I’ll know what to put first, above all else, as a guidepost for who and what I want to be this year.

But I’d love to know what is your One Thing? What is it that you are concentrating on this year? Are you wanting to write a book? Do you wish you could take the leap from full time work to full time blogging? Determined to nail email marketing? Prioritising your health? Do please share and let’s discuss.

  1. This has been something that, I think, each year everyone tries to go in with a full head of steam. For me, it has truly been building more of a social media presence, presently revamping the blog and trying to determine a different and more interesting way of delivering quality content. The trick is figuring out what others consider quality. In GaryVee terms … blogging and social media have become my hustle while I do have a daily grind. My goal is to diminish the present grind and turn the hustle into the grind. Sleep has become a fading commodity but … it honestly doesn’t bother me because I know with some patience the goal is obtainable.

  2. I’ve been blogging since March 2016 and the blog has brought me some amazing opportunities and has helped me make to some amazing connections. I also have a few ideas of what I’d like to implement this year, but my main one would be around monetization. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone else has planned for the year ahead.

  3. In 2017 there are lot of changes would be seen in SEO. Google is now favoring sites which provide valuable content. So content is king here in 2017 and Google will push more sites with awesome content.

  4. This is a great idea. I think my big thing this year should be consistency. I feel like that’s what I need to get back to. I need to pick a posting schedule and stick to it, and everything else will work out. It’s just too easy for me to give myself grace on deadlines right now.

  5. I guess it all boils down to ONE thing: knowing your 1 thing.

I read Gary Keller’s book “The One Thing” and I really liked the idea of knowing your 1 thing and focus only on it to get things done.

My 1 thing for 2017 is to get more traffic from Google.

From the last 2 years, I was getting decent traffic and this is the time to pump up content marketing to grow my blog’s traffic.

    Keep up the great work!

  6. Stacy never said we couldn’t have twosies :-) Ok … I know … weak, but I am going to throw this out to anyone in the thread. I have had the opportunity to meet and hear people like Daymond John, Mark Cuban and a number of other entrepreneurs speak. One thing I found they all seem to have in common is their group of guys/gals. I do what I do alone and I know many others do the same. I also know that I have a lot to share and learn. Sometimes it can be difficult to know which direction to go or frankly just to get up off your ass and keep grinding.

This is just my request or mutual lifeline for anyone who wants to be a part of a small group of like minds … I’m in. Nothing says we have to battle and succeed alone. Sites like Problogger give us a ton of information and sometimes it’s great to have that group to bounce ideas off or even help to push you forward on those days that it seems daunting.

If anyone is interested, hit me up on twitter @iamkentucker or shoot me an email at [email protected]. We can have a number of small groups so please no one feel the door is ever closed. When we have all reached our goals … wouldn’t it be great to say ProBlogger was where it all started? I’m ready to kick the crap (gotta watch the language) out of 2017! Anyone who wants to do the same … let’s do this thing!

  7. My blogging gig is very slow growing as I am a full time university student (and have 3 kids and a hubby who also studies). My ‘theme’ or ‘one thing’ for this year is growth. Personal, spiritual and on the blog. With respect of the blog, to measure growth, I have decided not to define numbers of subscribers or email followers as the goal. Rather, I want to received just one email/message from a follower (who is not family, friend or friend-of-friend; a stranger) to say that the information that I have provided has helped them. To know that I am providing value is far more important to me right now than the numbers. So I want to schedule more time to actually create QUALITY content. Have a great 2017 everyone!

    • I think this is an excellent “one thing”!

    • I think you have the right idea Rebecca. I don’t know if this reply would count for a person sending you a message that your content helped, however your post here helped me by seeing that there are people like my self who are trying despite incredible odds to better their selves and contribute to world in a tangible and meaningful way before being compensated for the effort. Good luck! Wish you nothing but success with your en devours.

  8. Lot of buzz has been there in SEO community about PBN’s. Google is getting more stern towards link building and this discussion is very hot among SEO experts.

Also I have made my goals that I had to increase my organic traffic for my blog this year. I have to work more hard on backlinks part now.

  9. Still hard for me to select a focus point in all I think I have to do to keep my online journey exciting. I’ve just read a blog post that was celebrating pursuing “shiny objects” and I have been wanting to get into some experiments totally outside of my core project but was holding myself from doing it.

Even though it might not sound like I am answering to your question, I will say, I am prioritizing allowing myself to try at least two new things this year. Let’s see how it goes.

    • Well I think that’s awesome! Nothing wrong with experimentation, but we can let our own rules hold us back. This gives you permission to have some wiggle room when it comes to creativity and that can only be a good thing.

  10. My one thing or focus this years is to be better than I was last year. That for me means a healthy balance and prioritization of many things. Coming from a career as a laborer into the blogging arena has it challenges for me personally. I dont think one realizes how much goes on behind the scenes so to speak to run a profitable blog. However I feel I am on the right track at the right time. Good luck to you all!
