Earlier in the week I posted Blogging is Like Watching Grass Grow – a video post about the early days of blogging. I’ve had some nice feedback from it and this morning on a whim decided to do a search on Google to find out what other people thought ‘Blogging is Like’.
The variety of posts that I found containing metaphors for blogging was quite amazing (and at times amusing).
As we’re winding down for the year – I thought I’d post some of the results that I found.

Hey Darren,
Great set of posts there
You have too much time on your hands.
That’s a good thing!
Happy Holidays!
Quite a list you got there. What will they think of next?
This is my fav of the Bloggin is like sex series:
http://www.kuanhoong.com/2007/08/29/10-reasons-why-blogging-is-like-sex/
From that I conclude, that sex is like making pizza, and slumber party is like bull riding)))))
I’m just surprised the number happens to be 42. I’m hoping it to be just coincidence.
Wow. Who would have thought that blogging could be so many things at one time…
Thanks for the link, appreciate it.
I guess there are quite a few people who compare blogging to sex out there…
Hi Darren,
I’m glad you enjoyed my blogging metaphor. (Yes, it was part of Successful Blog’s Group Writing Project.)
For some reason, that post remains one of my favorites. I look forward to reading the other blogging metaphors.
Hi Darren, thanks for the mention. Always appreciated…
Blogging is like…confusing a metaphor for a simile.
Good list there :)
Traditional indian meal image is just perfectly made :D
Hmmm…42. Coincidence I think not. Pretty cool post.
Blogging is like sex… people sure like sex…

I think that making money while blogging is like watching grass grow. I used to check my Google Adsense every 25 minutes hoping for something magical to happen. I was hoping to see a $15,000 month just like a blogger that I read often. It’s been a year and a half and I still haven’t stopped checking my Google Adsense every day but it’s been fun.

I have always felt blogging is like playing Simcity. The population is visitors and your funds are the results of ads. The more poeple you get to your site/city, the more taxes you get. Slow and steady progress will see your city grow over time.
There are a lot of changes you can make to make your city more pleasing on the eye which encourages growth. Land which was once popular, needs to be regularly tweaked to keep the land valuable. The city has to offer plenty of fun things for people to hang around. Hopefully in 2008, I can afford to put in an airport.
Finally, VisitorVille software will help you see your stats in Simcity mode. I haven’t used it yet but it looks like fun.
Man…blogging is like a lot of things…nice post, thoughtful.
When do the withdrawal symptoms begin?
Thanks for the mention Darren – interesting list! I wrote my Blogging is like Opera post as part of Liz’s metaphor project- definitely one of the most in interesting group writing projects of the year.
Interesting that 6% of these have to do with food…
But then again, 21% have to do with sex, while 31% have to do with sports/leisure activities.
At least you know where are minds are!
Sometimes you get some really weird stats.
Good to know it all.
Hi Darren, thanks for sharing my thoughts about Blogging Is Like Courting a Girl. Just had this idea while chasing a girl who is now my girlfriend… :)
I just find them so similar…
Darren, I love your Blog for both its design and content. But I think you’ve got a list of “similies” and not a list of “metaphors.”
A similie and a metaphor are similar creatures but distinctly different. A similie is a comparison using “like” or “as.” Metaphors often us the word, “is.” Wikipedia explains the difference between the two under the content area for “metaphor.”
Best wishes for a wonderful new year of blogging.
I’d like to add my own analogy:
Blogging is like losing your sanity!!
I only say this because my first two weeks of setting up my blog has been one big headache. But I think it gets easier from now on??
Thanks for all the tips Darren. If I hadn’t read your post ‘Blogging is like watching grass grow’ I think I might have given up after my first few days!
wow, so blogging is like 42 kinds of sense….
personally, blogging is like playing guitar ;)
Totally opposite the previous poster, I tend to say blogging is like therapy, but a hell of a lot cheaper! ;)
