This is part 8 (and the last) in a series of posts on increasing AdSense revenue for bloggers. The full series is Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7 and Part 8.
We have unpacked our Adsense Equation in detail and have given numerous tips for maximising Adsense Revenue. Whilst there are occasions that Adsense doesn’t perform as well on some websites for no particular reason as others we can safely predict that if you work on each of the four areas you should see an increase in the amount of the cheque that Adsense sends you at the end of each month. Remember though that your revenue will only be as high as your weakest link – work on all elements of the equation – not just one or two.
As well as the proceeding tips there are a number of other things that might be helpful to know in using Adsense that we couldn’t find a place for in previous posts.
Outgoing Links – One theory going around is that pages with fewer outgoing links result in higher click-throughs. Give your readers fewer options of links to click on and they are more likely to click on your ads. This MAY be true, but don’t let it determine your content. My Digicam site has many outward links because it is a page that acts as a hub of information from around the web. I’ve not noticed that this makes my revenue levels suffer – in fact I suspect its because of these helpful links that people come to my site.
Using Frames – If your site uses frames I’m told you should make sure your ads are placed in the frame where you content is or else it will not provide relevant ads for your content. Thanks Greg for this tip.
Don’t click your own ads. – It might be an obvious way to get a few click throughs and increase your Adsense revenue – but Google is very clever at working out if your clicks are genuine or not. Its not hard to track IP addresses and to see patterns emerging between where clicks are coming from. It is not worth the risk of being banned from the program for a few cents per click. Especially don’t click ads from the same IP address that you check your stats from – this is asking for trouble.
Don’t encourage your readers to click on your ads. Its against the agreement that you enter into with Google. Once again they will track you down if you break these rules. I’ve seen a number of people who have been banned from Adsense for this. Let your ads speak for themselves.
Monitor your Statistics. Many adsense users check their stats all day everyday. Whilst this might be overkill (its like watching grass grow) it is useful to track what is happening at this end of your campaign. Use channels to monitor which pages are doing well and which are not. Tweak pages that are not doing well and make more pages similar to those that do.
Alternative Ads – Use alternative ads for when Adsense cannot serve ads to your page. When they cannot find a suitable ad for your page Adsense will serve you with a ‘Public Service Announcement’ (PSA). These ads may be for a good cause, but they will not relate to the content of your page and will not earn you any money. Instead Adsense allows you to nominated an alternative ad that they will serve into the position instead of the PSA. I use Amazon for this, but also have experimented with affiliate alternative ads Affiliate Sensor which I find works really well as it lets you choose from a wide range of affiliate products and still target them to your site.

If your website contains Frames – redesign your website !!!
Google and other search engines simply can’t deal with Frames. Your page ranking will be reduced, your traffic will suffer, your ad-sense will suffer.
Make a template page and a common menu system. Frames “seemed like a good idea at the time”.
GREAT collection of articles.
I dumped adsense because all of the ads were competitive and I could not screen them out one by one. Discuss?
Adsense has performed really badly on a few of my sites, but they are mostly open source specific sites… I plan on using quite a few of these tips in my new ventures.
These are an awesome collection of articles that would help anybody starting out, or keeping up with the new tricks of the trade in adsense.
Thank your for your generous advise.
I really appreciate the advice and researched you’ve shared here. I’m new to the whole thing, so it’s been very helpful to me.
Thanks for your advice. I’ve just subscribed the AdSense programme and am wondering what happens next…
what type of topics would have a greater revenue???don’t have a clue
I was hoping you’d explain how to get Adsense into a WordPress blog.
Ellen
Nice short summary what to do and dont’s. Keep on the good work.
Very helpful! I have just added adsense today to http://www.teamadness.com.
I want to respond to Ellen Finkelstein’s message. Ellen, you can get the WordPress Adsense plugin from the public-spirited Phil Hord.

Good luck. Thank you Darren.

Thank you very much for good ideas and sharing your experience!
I’m also a blogger that runs a digital photography (but software) related website and I was very pleased woth the fact that you also feel the massive trend digital phtogoraphy is.
In my opinion, digital video is the next biggest trend to work on. Intenet bandwidth and storages capacity increase dramatically day after day. I see a big future in digital video and even already boght some domains for that reason.
How do you think?
After six months or so of successfully using Adsense I installed performancing.com analytics on my blogs, in the hope of gleaning information as you so helpfully suggest. This system, like the more recently launched Google Analytics, uses a short javascript include on the tracked pages. Within a week, to my horror, I was barred from Adsense for ‘using click-enhancing software’. I dropped the performancing.com includes pretty fast! I don’t know if performancing.com was at fault, and Google never told me whether or not this was the cause. They reinstated my account after two months, although I lost two months revenue. So beware of using third-party monitoring software.
What a way to learn about Google Adsense. I can’t believe that these tricks are unpacked to a novice like me in such a simple fashion. You have a knack of impressing your readers with good method of expression. Kudos and thanks for making this work. I will make some tweaks and see my performance.

I want to thank you for this series. I am just starting with my first blog, and even though it doesn’t have a specific theme I do it ’cause I like it!
To start off, a lot of reading went into it, but “what a surprise” I got overloaded. Your clear and well structured articles are refreshing.
Now I have a lot of work to do – but I think it will be fun.
What a great series. You had great advice that I hadn’t found elsewhere. And your links to outside sources of information was excellent.
Much appreciated.
I just started using AdSense on two of my blog this week, well actually yesterday. While hanging around, looking for more ways to make more money with the ads, your site, Problogger, made things sweet and simple!
Thanks for the series you did on adsense and blogging, worth every sound advice and tip mentioned.
Thank you so much for the detailed write up! I’ve had google ads for almost a month now and would have never through of some of this stuff. However, I’m wondering if anyone knows a way to publish in content ads if I’m using a site such as blogger which publishes all of my entries on to one page?
Thanks!,
Terry
I thoroughly enjoyed this series of blogs, and am planning on implementing them into my Political / Religious blog to see if anything comes of it, wish me luck!
Wanted to thank you for a well put together, informative site. I’m on the verge of putting together a blog / media center on my website that targets health related info and this will assist in elevating my learning curve from initiation onwards.
keep up the great work

Thanks for all the information. I have read through many of your posts and find them so helpful, and I haven’t even scratched the surface. You have compiled a great resource. Much more than I have found at any bookstore lately.
I’m hoping since my site promotes family travel, I can put some of your tips to great use – and now I have a better idea of what type of ads AdSense will serve up.
I figured that AdSense as a promary source of income is a pretty dumb idea!. If you really want to earn, affiliates do much much better than AdSense.
google has a lousy habit of dropping your site overnight and putting it back on just as suddenly. It happened to me.I guess the world just has to move to a more reliable search engine!
All the same, this article is EXCELLENT. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing the information!
Im yet to get any high paying ads, would like to slowly experiment with that.
This series of posting are eye-opening for me. I didn’t know there are so many possible ways to make ad sense work harder for you. thanks!
Thank you for all of this information. Most I knew about but how to put it together was something I was missing.
Hi! I found your blog thanks to Yaro who talks a lot about you…so I thought well if Yaro’s saying good things about “problogger”, I’m off to see what all the fuss is about – and I’m glad I did! :-) I’m actively looking to improve my own blog for my readers but I also want to start making a bit of money via it too. So yup, got to agree with most of the above comments – this series of posts was really imformative to me, as I really had no idea on the subject of Ads. Cheers Darren, really appreciate it!

Thanks a lot for this info! I used to be of the mind that people shouldn’t commercialize their blogs but after two years of blogging and looking for ways to develop a career out of this my attitude has changed. I find the tips on this site very helpful!
Thank you so much for showing us newbies how it’s done. I just started my first blog in the last month and added adwords but never thought there were so many ways to maximize the potential, I’m off to try out some different ideas you listed here now.
Thanks a lot! I learned a lot of things here since i just started blogging recently. I’ll try to use some of the ideas you presented here. Very helpful!
Awesome article and awesome site! Thanks for putting this all together for everyone. Keep it up.
Very interesting series. Of course, the real trick is generating content that brings people to your site (and, therefore, to your ads). That’s something that I’ve never been able to master.
Gr8 article. Should’nt we place adsense in IFRAMES also??
i read all the parts and i must say its detailed and cover all the aspects ranging from traffic to earnings and placement and i m going to try the tips u gave and will let u know about the results…
good job…
Thanks for the info:)
I have adsense on my blog but I really need to solve the traffic part of the equation!
Thanks again.
Thank you for the tips. I am just applying to get adsense. You have been great help.
I have wanted to get more than three adwords but even though I put them in my layout, they don’t show up. Any ideas out there?
A great set of articles. I’ve started on my blogs but I started with Adsense right away. I’m still trying to get the hang of it, but the ads seem quite targetted on one of my sites even though it has little content… but it has been up for years with few changes (before I added the ads) and has meta-keywords so searching for the name of the site brings me in at the number 1 google result! Just by having the bots search the index page for 3 or 4 years.
There is a tip for you: Write a lot of good, targetted content… then wait 2 or 3 years for the search bots to find you :)
thanks for the informative articles. I’m new to the wide world of blogging, and hope adsense can help put a dent in my hosting bill. These tips are a great resource for a beginner like me.
I’m a blogging and adsense novice and really appreciate the time you have taken to explain all of this. Also your generosity in sharing the information. Many thanks!
Thanks, for posting all those useful tips for earning more through Adsense. Nice compilation of tips, I have spent whole night to note down most if the tips that i didnt know before. Thanks once again. I will surely keep these things in mind.
Great stuffs here but would appreciate to put up with tips on how to re-arrange the Google Adsense ads as many would not have knowledge on how to do it in the back office
a nice series of tips that show there is no miracle and only well-directed hard work will lead somewhere.
I believe the advices are still current in 2008, but I wonder if those stories of bloggers making money from their site are still relevant.
i love it .all these are simple and small things.
if anything missing your adsense revenue will be less.
i feel it will help me to increase traffic and revenue.
Thank you for this great information. Useful, relevant advice for anyone hoping to make even a few bucks from their blog.
Hey Darren, thanks for this great article. I had read all of it a while back and just re-read it all to freshen up. I’m consulting for a website and am trying to make their adsense sales skyrocket through the roof with some of your tips.
Can you believe their website generates over 70,000 unique visitors every month and they barely break the 100$ barrier/month. It’s crazy!
Any idea on what kind of adsense revenue this website should make? I know the question is vague but it’s worth a shot. By the looks of the site (PR5 + thousands of pages) they should be making $1000/month, at the very least.
Thanks,

Hi Darren,
Thank you very much for your blog regarding Adsense. This seems to be useful to a certain extent. I have few doubts which is hounding me for a long time.
As you discussed in one of the post – I have nothing to loss so just shooting a mail to you :)
I currently have 100 visitors per day and less than 1% click to my advertisments on my site . anyways I don’t blame my readers becuse I never click on any google ads. And that do a technical blog like this do you expect a techie to click on google advertisment ? If they are not clicking on advt. then how the income is generated from google adsense ?
May be a silly question – but I am confused.
happy blogging.
Thanks a lot for these wise words. I’m just starting to blog from scratch and this was just what I needed to point me in the right direction.
my blog has adsense on it. although i get many hits per day, no one bloody clicks on my ads. please check my blog and tell me whats my mistake
