How to Promote Yourself (and Your Blog) at a Conference

Posted By Darren Rowse 21st of March 2008 Blog Promotion, Video Posts 0 Comments

Conferences can be a prime space for bloggers to recruit new readers. Last week at SXSWi it was fascinating to watch hundreds of bloggers attempt to standout from the crowd, network and develop fruitful relationships with others there. In this video I point out 5 of the better tips and strategies that I saw:

  • Unique Business Cards
  • Elevator Pitches that Solve Problems
  • Utilize Your Badge
  • Interview People that You Meet
  • Do something Out of the Box
  • Watch this video also on Youtube.

  1. Thanks for the kind words Darren. I knew my business card worked, but I never realized it made such an impression on you. Last minute brainstorms, FTW!

See you next year, I hope.

    Cheers,

  2. I have a site http://www.chatadsense.com It’s currently setup as a forum / message board. Should I change the site to a nice blog site like problogger.net or what should i do? It seems easier to have a blog site than a message board. If I do change it to a blog what are some sites I can go about doing this or a place I can download a blog script so I can install it. I’m trying to build a community for ppl to talk about adsense but the forum just isn’t working. I think a blog like this might give me better results…e-mail me if you can help me..Thanks a bunch

  3. I love the idea of the magnetic business card. My wedding photographer passed out about a dozen of those during our wedding, with our engagement photo on the front and his name, phone #, and Web site on the bottom right hand corner. We still have it to this day on our fridge, 5 years later.

He handed them out to close friends and family (they’re not cheap, so I guess that’s why he only had 10-12), and as far as I can tell, ALL of them still had them on their fridges to this day. Great way for people to remember you. Oh, and he was an awesome photog anyway; he gets tons of biz, but it was definitely a clever marketing tool that keeps him uppermost in our minds whenever any of us is asked for a wedding photog reference.

    Salut,
    Marjorie

  4. Thanks again for the great marketing tips.
I have business cards ready to go for the next conference.

Creating a brand identity is key.

  5. Those’re some great marketing tips. If I ever go to one of those conferences I’m going to use them all! : D

  6. The cloths worn make a big difference. When I went to Startup Camp London the only man wearing a kilt got a lot of photos taken of him!

  7. Niklas Kunkel (above) has a very good point.
When you take on any new procedure, you need to do it like it’s natural. Doing something out of the box is a dangerous strategy that will land in the ‘nobber’ bin if you don’t do it with style.

Showing your honest interest in other people is probably the safest and #1 rule.

Nice video though. I’m off the TheNextWeb in Amsterdam later this week and i’ll definitely be thinking about my elevator pitch while i’m there.

    Steve.
