Win a Copy of WordPress for Dummies

Posted By Darren Rowse 10th of December 2007 ProBlogger Site News 0 Comments

Wordpress-For-DummiesOver the next five days I’m going to run a little daily competition here at ProBlogger.

The prize – each day from Monday through to Friday I’ll be giving away an autographed copy of WordPress For Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson.

I’ve seen some parts of this book already (the full thing is winging it’s way from the US as I write this) and it is a great read and well worthwhile the purchase for those starting out with and wanting to extend their knowledge of a blog platform that more ProBlogger readers use than any other.

How do you Win a Copy?

It’s simple – all you have to comment on ProBlogger over the next week. Each day of the week I’ll choose one random comment left on that particular day (on any post on the blog). That commenter will win a copy of the book – it is as simple as that.

The comments do need to be legitimate (ie – on topic and adding something to the conversation) – but you can enter as many times as you like – each comment that you leave is an ‘entry’.

I’ll announce the five winners at the end of the week.

  1. This is a great offer Darren!

The title seems a little offending though! For Dummies!

  2. I could totally use this… I’m in!

  3. I’m all for it!
    I’m in!
    :-D

  4. I wouldn’t call myself a dummy but all information is good information if taken on board. Nice competition.

  5. I would consider all books in the “dummy” series outstanding for starters and, occasionally, non-starters, a quick desk reference thing.

    I’m in, too!

    I.

  6. Many thanks for sponsoring this give away, Darren! I’m excited to see the 5 winners at the end of the week :)

    And.. umm.. I already have a copy, so…. ;)

  7. i love me some wordpress! i wannit!

  8. This is a great contest. I know enough to get by, but there’s some content in that book that I’d love to learn.

  9. I switched to WordPress back in September. I haven’t really read any of the documentation on it yet as I have just sorta fumbled my way around and figured it out so this book might help me out a bunch.

Plus getting the ProBlogger’s autograph would be pretty cool.

  10. I just saw this book on Amazon, and I was wondering how “for dummies” it actually is. Has anyone had a chance to pick up this book and take a look? What do you think?

  11. These “dummy” books are right up my alley … at least that’s what my wife says :)

  12. I saw an amusing cartoon about the For Dummies series captioned “Don’t they write books for smart people anymore?”

Thanks for the shot Darren. Though I’m thinking I’d need the “WordPress for the Extra Special Dummy”.

  13. Scariest part on this competition is that I might actually win the book and learn something new while reading it. However, I am willing to take my changes and join the competition.

  14. Any information can help someone learn a new trick. I’ll be entering. :)

  15. Okah Darren so this is a kind of promotion trick for blog isnt it ? Thats a good offer though .

  16. I don’t know how helpful this book will be to me, but I probably could learn a few things from it. I’ve been lucky lately, so I might as well try. If the book turns out to be not so helpful, I could just put up a contest on my blog.

By the way, thank you for this great competition, Darren.

  17. Hi, can I run for competition from Italy?

  18. This is such a great news for all those newbie bloggers and to get started in posting some comment on other people blog.

“dummies”…. well don’t take it to heart. Everyone has to start some where. This when you don’t really know much and will be reading, learning alot.

“Be a fool for a day then be a fool for life” (maybe a couple of weeks) Even a professor has gone through kindergarden or nursary once.

  19. Darren, I do need to have this book since I’m a dumb WordPress user :-). I am definitely in.

Somehow I tried to buy one last weekend through Amazon but apparently they don’t ship to Bali (Indonesia). So, if i or someone in my country win, how can we pick up the book? Do you ship to our country?

  20. Darren, I take it you’re going to do a full review of the book once you get it? Much as I’d like the book myself, I’d be just as interested to hear what the ‘pros’ think of it…

  21. A free book filled to the brim with WordPress wisdom? Count me in!

  22. Yah … have always been looking for such a book. Well, will wait and see if I’ll be one of the winners.

  23. is this kind of comment enough for me to get that book? :D

  24. great idea!

  25. Nice Darren, contests are great. I can only imagine a ton of spam (though they probably won’t look like spam) comments to increase their chances in this contest since every comment counts towards an entry. I guess it doesn’t really matter since you blog will be uber active LOL

  26. Oh, that sounds fantastic! I definately count, lol

  27. anyone can enter worldwide. I’m pretty sure Lisa is happy to ship internationally. If not – I’ll kick in the postage.

  28. I’ve been edging closer to a redesign for a while, this could really help. Please count me in.

  29. What an awesome way to get truckloads of RSS subscribers to touch physical base with your blog.

An easy challenge with a sweet as reward! Genius!

    Scot

  30. I would love to see stats of how these contests increase your stats. For those of us reading you in a reader I suppose page views get increased when we jump out to comment. And some people will write about the contest which will drive new readers here (maybe you have captured them all already!). I would think contests where you ask people to write an article would be best, but maybe not since not as many people would do it. Very easy to write a comment.

  31. Oh, wonderful synchronicity! I’ve been pondering a move from Blogger, and today opened a WordPress account so I can get a feel for it – winning the book would be perfect.

When it comes to the tech side of things, I’m happy to call myself a “dummy” – for me, it’s all about the words.

    I’m in!

  32. No problems here w/ international shipping, btw .. thanks for the postage offer, though!

  33. Thanks Darren for the opportunity- have just checked out the book on Amazon. The TOC looks like it will not only help a beginning blogger, but be a great reference when one of those widgets or plugins doesn’t work. A book I would love to add to my library

  34. Another great Darren Rowse promotion!

Even if I don’t win a book, participating in the competition – and regular reading of Problogger – is beneficial.

I’ve been reading some of the other “top” professional bloggers. So far, none of the others that I’ve looked at quite measure up.

  35. This is a fantastic competition. I have just moved to (self hosted) wordpress and although I have muddled through okay, I am sure there is more I could do.

  36. Hmm.

    WordPress user? Check.

    Plans to expand? Check.

    Delusions of grandeur? Check.

Dummy? Check, check and check again.

  37. Not using WordPress anymore (Moved to Drupal), but should be a nice book to have in case I change my mind.

  38. john – from fat to fit – they do increase page views a little – but not as many as you might expect. I do it more as a way to give a little something back to readers – all about building community and loyalty etc.

  39. woot!

count me in! this is great! i would like to have that book :)

Darren, if you don’t mind me asking, what inspired you to give away not one, but five copies of this book?

  41. Dan – no real inspiration – Lisa emailed offering 5 copies. I snapped them up for my readers :-)

  42. Is this contest open to non-US residents as well?

  43. I’d love to win a copy – I really need to learn to customize.

  44. Its a good book to keep just for reference but it can also be sold at ebay at a good price if it is autographed by the equally famous Darren. Nah just kidding.

  45. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the publication of this book. Try as I might I’m having real difficulties getting to grips with WordPress, and although I’m relatively happy with my blogs, I really want to understand the inner workings!

  46. Sure is Grace

  47. heather: I think WordPress is still one of the easiest platforms to understand, I’ve had headaches and frustrations with things like TYPO3, you’ll think WP is godsent!

  48. Note the grammar typo in your post:

“It’s simple – all you have to comment on ProBlogger over the next week.”

    Enjoy your site,

    Daniel

Hi Darren…I am going to start a blog soon on wordpress and am not good with xhtml, php etc…so I definitely need this book….moreover initially i had searched for this book in India…but its not available here….and I thought getting it from US will be a costly affair……so I hope I can win this contest…will comment everyday(I hope my internet connection doesn’t ditch me.. :)

  50. Great contest, Darren. I have been exploring new platforms. I admit that while I would like the flexibility that WordPress offers, I am a little daunted by the time involved in learning a new software.
