How to Make Money From Your Blog

Posted By Darren Rowse 4th of May 2006 Pro Blogging News 0 Comments

Steve Pavlina has written another of his comprehensive articles (7000+ words) on the topic of making money from a blog. It’s filled with loads of advice from his own experience of his last 19 months of blogging in which he’s built his own blog’s income to a level of $200 per day from a variety of streams.

Thanks to the numerous people who sent me this link including Andy.

  1. Wow, it is a big and long thing with numerous references to previous articles. I’ve just finished reading it.

What’s interesting for me is that Steve Pavlina’s aproaches to monetize a blog are often quite different or opposite to approaches presented by Problogger. Well, I read both blogs!

  2. One of the thing that Steve said, and Darren has also said, is to write about something you love. I think this should be expanded to: write about something you’re passionate about.

My flagship blog, as it were, is devoted to a topic I passionately hate. :)

  3. “What’s interesting for me is that Steve Pavlina’s aproaches to monetize a blog are often quite different or opposite to approaches presented by Problogger.”

What are those difference ? I’m interested to know about that.

    Thanks

  4. You know what I just realized after reading Stevie P’s blog…

I’m just hit the $100+/day mark (not quite there, but getting there).

But it’s not from Adsense (though I get a little extra from there) and it’s not affiliates (thought I get a little extra from there as well), but from the clients who hire me based on my personality, expertise, camraderie, and honesty on my blog.

Dude, does that make me a FOUR FIGURE BLOGGER or does it only count if it’s totally passive income that I make from Adsense/advertising and affiliate programs as opposed to the active income that I make teaching in real life?

  5. AP – if you’re making $100 a day you’re a five figure blogger :-) $36500 a year!

    Congratulations – that’s great.

As I’ve said here before – there are many ways to make money from a blog and to make it in indirect ways as a result of your blogging rather than from ads or affiliat programs is just as valid in my books as any other more direct method.

  6. Cool, that just made my day. Anyways, thanks D for a great blog. Ever since I got serious about blogging and doing it daily, I’ve always checked out your site for great ideas and stories.

  7. God bless Pavlina! hehe, this is just the kind of an article i needed to read nowadays, with the launch of my heavy-advertised blog, these quotes did help me get more determinded about putting ads in dominant places:

“If you do decide to generate income from your blog, then don’t be shy about it. If you’re going to put up ads, then really put up ads. Don’t just stick a puny little ad square in a remote corner somewhere.”

” “You know, Steve. Your web site seems to contain an awful lot of ads.” Of course I’m aware of it. I’m the one who put the ads there. There’s a reason I have this configuration of ads. They’re effective! People keep clicking on them. If they weren’t effective, I would remove them right away and try something else. ”

Of course these don’t mean i should bomb my new site with adsense all over, but considering a lot of blog from the same genre do the same thing, i don’t see where it can hurt me =)
