Snarkiness I can live with. It’s usually someone just trying to get attention and more times than not there’s no real harm done.
Hate OTOH is unsettling and as you know, it can be downright dangerous. I’ve experienced it directed towards me in the past and there has been a lot of personal (public) damage done.
A lot of it has to do with the web being a somewhat anonymous medium where people sitting in front of a computer screen feel powerful in knowing that no matter who they are, their words have an impact, whether positive or negative.
It’s the cases where that hate migrates offline where physical harm can be done that are the scariest.
