What we Learned at PBEVENT in 2012 That Will Make Our 2013 Event Even Better!

There are just 89 days until PBEVENT 2013!
Today the organising team for this years event met around the dining room table at my home to put the finishing touches on this years schedule (we’ll release it in the coming days) and to continue planning for our September 13-14 gathering on the Gold Coast.
As we planned my mind went back over the previous annual events that we’ve held and how each time we’ve held one we’ve seen the event evolve – often based upon the feedback from previous events.
This year is no different. In fact this year we’ve made a couple of changes to what we’re running based upon some stats we noticed about who attended last year.
I thought sharing these stats (and the changes that are coming to PBEVENT 2013) might help those of you still deciding if you will come to make up your mind (there are still plenty of tickets here).
Attendee Experience Level
Last year saw a real spread of attendees in terms of experience level. Here’s a breakdown.
As you can see we had all levels of bloggers represented:
- 12.1% had yet to start blogging
- 23.9% were in their first year of blogging
- 18.1% were in their 2nd year
- 19.8% were in their 3rd year
- 9.5% were in their 4th year
- 10.3% were in their 5th year or above
Last years sessions were a mix in terms of what level they were aimed at. In fact I was looking through some feedback today and noticed this comment from an attendee that echoed that:
It was informative and inspiring. The information was suited to both the novice blogger but also the more experienced blogger. I loved hearing from experts and loved the panel sessions. I felt that the event was a reality check for me and I’m now getting back on track as a result.
While we did well in presenting a spread of levels last year we want to take this further in 2013.
What stood out to me about the spread of attendees last year was that we had a lot of newer bloggers in attendance. As a result – this year we’re adding in a couple of sessions JUST for beginners.
Also of interest to me last year was that we had quite a number of very experienced bloggers in the room and heard feedback from some attendees that they wanted more ‘advanced’ content. This has also been on our mind as we’ve prepared this year and you’ll see when we release the schedule this year that we’ve added a couple of more technical and advanced sessions for this group.
We’re also working on some more informal/conversational sessions to be held in smaller groups to dig into specific topics (some of which will be beginner and some of which will be more advanced).
So whether you’re yet to start blogging, or are in your early days or are more experienced – this year you won’t be alone and we’ll be working hard to tailor the content specifically to your needs.
Monetization Level
In a survey of attendees last year we asked how attendees saw themselves as bloggers. Were they ‘hobby’ bloggers, ‘part time bloggers’, ‘full time bloggers’ or blogging for their or someone else’s business?
Here’s what they said:
The ‘Small Business Blogger’ category surprised us a little because we’d not really prepared a great deal of sessions on that topic but as we examined the attendee list we did realise that quite a number of attendees using their blogs to support existing businesses.
As a result – this years schedule has a couple of sessions that focus upon small business blogging. We have a session on selling physical products from a blog but also have a more general one for small businesses.
This won’t be at the expense of our normal sessions on monetizing through working with brands or creating products to sell – but hopefully will give those of you looking to use a blog to support your business some more practical teaching to take home.

Feedback from Last Years Attendees
Today as I was getting the above charts from the survey of last years attendees I also looked at some of the feedback we were given in that survey. Here’s just a handful of the things attendees said that they liked about the event:
“I loved the honesty of the successful bloggers in terms of their journey and start up and continued challenges. I left feeling ‘I can do this’ and ‘it is definitely not too late’ and I have some great tools and ideas to go forth with.”
“The quality of the presenters was incredible, and it was so much more in-depth than what I had expected. The virtual pass is a fantastic idea also as I wanted to be at all the sessions so to be able to do so is wonderful. I also thought it was exceptional value and very well put together. The entire team involved did an incredible job!”
“The speakers and panel members were all brilliant. As an introvert I really had to force myself to introduce myself to other bloggers during the breaks but persisted and was getting quite comfortable with it by the end! So thanks for that! Also it made me look more closely at why the hell I’m doing this and inspired me to carve out something more “me”. Starting today!”
