Why Every Entrepreneur Must Become a Blogger

This is a guest contribution from blogger and graphic designer Luke Guy

You’ve heard about this blogging stuff. You’re already making money and time isn’t on your side. Is blogging really worth it? Can afford to do it (time-wise). The answer is: Yes. Here’s why.

As you know eBay, Amazon, and all these the other sites spend millions to do one thing. And that’s win people’s trust. How much are you spending to build trust with new people? And how exactly are you doing this? I understand they’re not making time anymore, but trust doesn’t come easy either. Knowledge is ever exploding and your competition probably just started their blog yesterday. But is it for you? What if you’re an ecommerce site? Do you still need a blog? I talk more about this in my article: The Epic Guide To Growing Sales With Content Marketing. Google is a business site and they make billions, simply by building trust and letting users feel the Google experience without spending a penny. How have they done this?

They built the following all for free:

They spent millions of dollars trying to gain users and one day beloved customers. Don’t tell me freeware and resources can’t build a business. The top websites in the world do it. According to Alexa, the top 5 sites in the world are freeware based.

I’m not saying go make free software that cost millions. I’m just saying start building and create something useful. And you can doing that by starting with a simple blog post. Instead of having agenda, just be helpful. Why? You’re building relationship. It’s hard to turn a man down that’s always giving.

It’s not that blogging is some kind of magic, it’s what it does. Let me give you some of the other benefits here besides trust:

  1. You solve problems (with your product)
  2. It’s effective advertising
  3. Another form of marketing
  4. Great way to capture emails
  5. Growing connections
  6. Receive feedback from customers
  7. Gain Influence
  8. Attracts people
  9. Express your thoughts
  10. Gives you a talking piece

So much is happening from your blog article. You really don’t have time not to write. How much and how long is up to you. But no where in history has man had more opportunity to build an audience and make a living doing it.

What To Write About

I’ve seen many business owners talk about the world and everything in it when blogging. Wrong move. Why? You attract traffic who don’t care anything about your products. You want to attract buyers here. Traffic isn’t the only thing you want, but traffic that buys and trusts you.

The number one thing you should be focusing on is your customer’s problems. Let it be your title even. Within that post, talk about the problem and the pain it causes. From there, explain how your product can solve that. When you advertise that, and share that, you will attract people from all over who are now valuable leads. People who are hurting and needing a solution. You are that solution! By addressing their problem, offering a solution, and being entertaining… You will generate sales. It’s really beautiful.

Once you blog and gather traffic, you want to establish that trust even farther and get their email. So you can spam them? No, so you can hook them and pull them close. And then…  Offer even better content like webinars or free courses. You want to saturate that list with your amazing content. Once you do that good things began to happen.

How An Email List Is A Customer List In Disguise

The biggest thing you can do is build the email list. By sending that list content that helps, it makes them love you. You’re cultivating relationship, and better yet traffic. That traffic will buy from you more than any other traffic. Why? It has relationship with you. It’s even better than Facebook which is built much like the list. That’s fading though tremendously though. I talk more about that here: How the Email List Beats Facebook Every Time.

As that list grows your traffic will grow, your readers will grow (in number:), and your profits will grow. So having your opt-in forms handy is a must. Make sure to build an email collecting machine are your site. This is great when you have a deal you want to mention.

Imagine a list 3,000 people. 20-30% usually open from a trusted blog. That’s around 900 people who will that deal. Imagine if only 2% bought from you. That’s 18 sales from a single email. Once again though, they’re not waiting to get pitched. They’re waiting to hear from you because you help them so much.

The Biggest Struggle With This Method

Main problem most people face is creating the content, and making sure that content is amazing. Not easy. Someone with passion must be behind it. If money is your drive, content creation isn’t for you. If making someone’s life easier today your drive, then you will make it. It’s not easy writing for free at first, but soon it becomes who you are. You must serve a purpose and be the hero for someone.

Many feel overwhelmed with creating content and they under the load. Just know it’s worth it, that it’s not easy reaching out, but the connections you’re building is worth the struggle. If you’re wanting to gain a customer base in a noisy world, this is how you do it. You don’t want to park the business in ghost town do you? Then you must build your traffic and get more eyes on you. From there you build trust, and then you gain a client. It’s that simple, but you can’t be selfish. You must simply be a power giver.

  1. The brilliant point here Luke is that you get what you give freely. Billion dollar empires are the result of billions of dollar’s worth of value offered. In the beginning, much of that value offered does not return with a price tag or in money numbers but rather in gaining the trust of people who love and believe in what you do. I publish one free 7,000 word blog post weekly to Blogging from Paradise. I gotta admit; I love what I do so it’s play but still, I am giving it away for free on the front end. On the back end though my businesses and cash flow continues to grow through all channels and I am being introduced to new businesses all because I kept on giving freely, for years, and continue to do so.

    Smart message thanks much!

    Ryan

  2. Nice article, and something I think a lot of biz owners overlook, even still today. Blogging on a consistent basis has been one of the biggest traffic/lead generation methods I’ve had over the course of the last 10 years, and I don’t ever see it dropping.

Besides the fact that I get traffic based on the content of the article, which helps with links and google juice, it also shows off my knowledge of the work I do, building up myself as an authority on freelancing / WordPress development. So potential customers read what I write, see that I have the knowledge and skills, and it adds that extra layer of trust which generally translates into a sale.

  3. I agree. Building trust is the best way to get customers from your blog. However, the process can be rather painstaking to get to the place where even the best efforts will pay off. Once the blog starts gaining momentum though (and it will happen with consistency) monetary success is only one of the awards. Thank you for sharing your insights!

  4. Good Idea to promote your business , services by the help of web 2.0 sites. Free blog give your business or anything more exposure. Nice article, I’m working from year ago on blogger and other web 2.0 but after reading this I got new points new information. Thanks for sharing with us.

  5. You hit the nail on the head. I’ve preached to many the importance of blogging: how it gains trust, builds authority, and provides value to their audience.

Next time instead of trying to explain this to people, I’ll just point them to this article here!

    Great post, Luke.

  6. Hi Luke!

I sort of blogged my way into entrepreneurship rather than the other way around, but I definitely agree that every entrepreneur should have a blog. It goes both ways really – having a blog is a good way to attract new customers and is also a great way to provide more value to existing customers.

The thing that’s so great about email is that it’s essentially marketing and relationship building on autopilot. Autoresponders make it effortless and in my opinion is the only real way to get a consistent income from your blog.

  7. Nice article and interesting. As per my view blogging and press releases are much important for a company to increase the traffic to their site.

  8. I remember when I used to work for my former boss years back, I always advised him to blog, regardless what business/niche he wants to write about, since he had quite a number of businesses big and small.

I think to this day, he still remembers me. And I hope he has started to blog.

Hope too he would read this post to inspire him more. :)

  9. Very nice article! I like these lines most, “They spent millions of dollars trying to gain users and one day beloved customers. Don’t tell me freeware and resources can’t build a business. The top websites in the world do it. According to Alexa, the top 5 sites in the world are freeware based.”

Thanks for the nice one’s again.

  10. Hi Stacey!
Your post builds a very persuasive case for online media marketers and your advice on blogging is great with regards to a potential link building source.
    Regards.

  11. Hey you wrote a nice article about the Blogger, I agree with your statement. Blogging on a predictable premise has been one of the greatest activities. As we know Google is a business site millions of people visit here everyday to have something about what they want to search and they explore their knowledge also.

  13. Facebook is getting harder and harder for businesses, especially for businesses and the way its algorithm is working. I definitely agree with you that collecting emails is still the most important end game other than converting to customers. Doesn’t sound hip but is still the most rock solid thing that people consistently check. Great stuff!

  14. 7 years since i discovered ProBlogger and the most insightful tips for raising your online business of the ground are still to be found here. I can’t agree more with the post – give the users something they want and need, something they are looking for or something they will find useful and success is inevitable.

  15. Blogging is boring in the beginning when you’re just starting the online business. After a while, it becomes quite interesting. It’s good that all Internet entrepreneur was become bloggers simply because you get excited to the point of writing content on-the-fly and wanting people to know about your Internet business updates.

Additionally, one thing many people still don’t know today is that blogs get indexed faster by search engines than static HTML webpages. Thank you so much Darren for keeping us inspired about blogging and making money online from affiliate marketing full-time. :-)

  17. Great roundup as usual, really enjoyed your article. Thanks for sharing your article on Why Every Entrepreneur Must Become a Blogger. I will definitely share this to my friends. Looking forward for your best article this year.

  18. Great post. I’ve often spoken about blogging to entrepreneurs, and I always stress how this activity will make them discoverable and help them build authority and influence. Many don’t see the need…but they are missing the point, as you said.

And when the competition isn’t blogging…or not blogging much…that’s a REAL opportunity to rise above the other sites and get yourself a #1 spot in the search engine results pages. That means more visitors and more people on your mailing list…more prospects.

  19. There’s so much truth and power in this line: “If making someone’s life easier today your drive, then you will make it. It’s not easy writing for free at first, but soon it becomes who you are.”

Thanks for reminding me why I started blogging in the first place.

  20. Your Post is very Used full thanks for Shearing I am really enjoyed this post.

  21. Thanks for the tip on focussing on what problem you can solve for your clients, Luke. I keep forgetting to show that I’m an expert in my field, and I need that reminder. My future blog post topics will be more in tune with what I can do for others!

Great tips, and great post! :)

Now… to tailor your tips to Wording Well… ;)

  22. You wrote a nice article about the Blogger, I agree with your statement. Blogging on a predictable premise has been one of the greatest activities.

  23. The hardest part is trying to write articles for your blog that are unique content.

  24. informative article.thank you for discussing..

  25. It gets more and more difficult to write unique content in specific niches as they become so saturated.

  26. Hi Luke,

I couldn’t agree more!!! Blogging as a business tool is phenomenal when done right. It’s the absolute best way to demonstrate that we are competent, credible, skilled and worth buying.

Like you said, the biggest problem is that businesses don’t understand how to create the content because they don’t really understand marketing or their business.

I teach my clients how to start thinking like their customers by identifying:

    1. What business they are “really” in!
    2. What the tangible values are.
    3. What are the “specific” problems that each tangible value solves.
    4. Who do you “specifically” solve the problems for.
    5. How are your products or services “a” part of a solution.

It’s all a function of gaining clarity and focus which leads to execution.

When you can get clear about your business and the foundation I mentioned above you will never run out of content and your content ought to be relevant, compelling and inspiring.

I know for me when I got there over six months ago the sky’s just opened up. I’m now a regular contributor on SEMrush’s blog as well as preparing doing a webinar for them and sitting on upcoming panels.

My blog and community are also opening up the doors to me writing both offline and online is a few major US business journals.

It’s all because I’m very clear and very focused on others instead of on myself. That’s the most important aspect to blogging next to generating fantastic content in my opinion.

Great post Luke!!! I could go on and on because I love this topic.

I hope you have a great weekend!

    ~ Don Purdum

  27. Great article, and the bit you state about blogging about the “world” is very true. I have told a few of my clients exactly the same, but they get the idea that more and random blog posts will engage more readers, which is true, but their bounce rates increase. So yes, you can get more views with a wide range of blog posts, but those posts do not turn the readers into customers.
