What Was Your Most Popular Post in 2007?

Posted By Darren Rowse 26th of December 2007 Reader Questions 0 Comments

As we draw closer to the end of the year I spent some time this week doing some reviewing of ProBlogger.

One of the things I looked at was to analyze popular posts. It got me wondering what type of posts were most popular on other blogs.

So here’s a reader question:

What Was Your Most Popular Post in 2007?

By ‘popular’ I’m thinking of posts that got a combination of traffic, comments and link love from other blogs. It’s up to you to define it as you wish.

I’ll share mine in an upcoming year in review post – but in the mean time I’d love to see yours. Feel free to leave a link, the title and tell us a little about the post and why it was successful.

  1. Mine, according to my popular posts WordPress plugin is ‘Wondering if I’m capable.

Another one was when I hosted the All Women blogging carnival.

Both of these were commented on, viewed and Stumbled which definitely helped their popularity.

  2. My most popular post is:

    http://www.random-good-stuff.com/2007/06/24/puchipuchi-bubble-wrap-toy/

It got picked up by couple of other posts and I receive a decent amount of search engine hits.

  3. 10 EverPink Only For Moms Social Networking Websites

Above article of mine recieved huge amount of response.

    Comments, mails, backlinks.

There were so many females mailing me and thanking me for the list. They recieved a place to hang-up I guess.

I made few good online friends due to the same article :)

  4. My most popular, unusual post was:

How to lose weight with straws

    http://www.weight-loss-tips.ws/lose-weight-with-straws/17/

  5. My appologies, the above post I mentioned was actually posted in 2006.

  6. Most popular for me is Brutal Backyard Shed Workouts for Huge Muscles.

Went off like two cats in a sack.

    RT

  7. My most popular post wasn’t even a favorite. It was written during a moment of crankiness after reading a blog post about how anyone can be a writer.

Freelance Writing: Not Everyone Can Do It

  8. Mine was a post about grade school memories and the agony of it all:

    http://junkdrawerblog.com/2007/11/you-couldnt-pay-me-to-do-it-over-again.html

  9. My post on
How to get up early in the morning? at http://positivensuccess.blogspot.com/2007/12/how-to-get-up-early-in-morning.html
was the most popular post for me. It got many diggs from readers and good comments.

Actually I do not include link to any post in body of comment in others blog and sorry here for doing this. I think it should be done here anyway.

    Merry Christmas!

  10. it was a shortcut for locking windows….. I wasn’t expecting that it would be mentioned on some really good sites..
    http://theblogwhichsaysall.blogspot.com/2007/05/shortcut-for-locking-windows.html

  11. My most popular post is easily, Using the Rule of 5 For Blogging Success.

This was actually due to Problogger. I submitted this as a part of the 31 Days to Building a Better Blog series.

    Thanks Darren!

And Happy Holidays to all of you.

    Takuin Minamoto

  12. Although I write about marketing (press releases, enewsletters, etc), my most popular post was called “Why Your Business Should Blog.”

I know blogs are popular, but I still meet a lot of people who don’t know what they are or what they’re for. It was great to see such interest in the topic as it pertains to marketing your business!

  13. Well, thanks in part to your wonderful link love, MInister Rowse, my post about blogger salaries put me on the blogosphere map!

    Hope your Christmas was great,
    Paula

  14. The most popular post on The Atma Jyoti Blog this year was a surprise. It was Key Concepts in Yoga: Raga and Dwesha. I was surprised because it is an uncommon subject. I give the credit to StumbleUpon, which is the main draw to our site.

    Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

  15. My most popular article was Won’t You Be My Drinking Buddy Neighbor? It was picked up on BoingBoing, and then it kinda went crazy from there. I wish every article did this! :)

  16. My most-trafficked post of 2007 was my anti-top-ten top-ten list.

    http://www.yebot.net/55/top-ten-reasons-to-avoid-top-ten-lists-like-this-one.html

  17. Hi,
my most popular post was an article of about ten lines which refers to an article in an economic newspaper. The article tells about that it is possible as am woman to have career an to have children.
I don’t understand why this article is on number one of my posts.
    Here is the link: http://seminare4you.de/weblog/article/35/verzicht-auf-kinder-lohnt-sich-nicht

    Have a good new year.
    Greetings from Germany.

  18. Darren, no Happy Christmas, nothing!?

    This man is DRIVEN…!

  19. Hi Darren! I am still very young in this field so I do not have huge traffic yet and “fans” yet, but I guess this post was popular enough, and I think it was the most interesting one. Why Bloggers Should Show Their Own Pictures On Blogs They Own. Thanks for being my inspiration for this post.

  20. Although I was away for three weeks after posting it, this one on The 20 Blogging Commandments got the most hits and comments this year. :-)

  21. My most popular post was promoting a great tailgating game and supply, the portable and inflatable beer pong table. It probably did not hurt that the photo that accompanies the post had a hot girl in a bikini playing the game. With that said, I know all the guys will want to check out the link:

    http://www.tailgatingideas.com/2007/10/10/port-o-pong-beer-pong-table/

  22. My most popular posts of 2007 were these…
The post that received the most traffic: http://www.elainevigneault.com/how-to-make-your-text-on-myspace-bigger-or-colorful.html
The post that received the most substantial comments: http://www.elainevigneault.com/the-oppression-connection.html

  23. Wonderful list to go through. Thanks for giving us all this great reading on a slow week.

    Mine was

    http://www.personal-growth-with-corinne-edwards.com/the-big-idea-when-to-bail-out/

  24. We can’t stop here. This is bat country.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas with a feline cast.
    http://movie-cat.com/content/view/82/1/

  25. My article on starting an IRa without a lot of money is my most popular by far.

    http://www.greenpandatreehouse.com/2007/12/03/how-to-start-an-ira-without-a-lot-of-money/

It’s pageview is double he 2nd most popular.

  26. I actually nailed an interview with Chad Pennington of the Jets. Before that, I was just a hack writer. I weaseled my way by interviewing his foundation first. Then I had them owing me a favor. A little while later I asked if Chad would answer questions via email and he did.

It actually gave me the confidence to start another blog about HS Sports in Northern NJ which gets more hits than the Jets website. I also started writing for the local paper covering HS sports.

    My HS blog is http://www.ironhillssports.com

  27. Our design blog is online only for a very short amount of time and there are not that many post, but still we got the most popular: http://www.designblog.powerdesigner.pl/2007/12/designer-life-is-now-even-cooler.html

  28. Top 50 Most Popular Video Sites was (is still) mine.

I wrote it for blog marketers to encourage video syndication for links and traffic, and it turned into a top visited page on the web for people looking for video sites to simply find new stuff.

It was crazy trying to figure out how to monetize the traffic from a top ranking with a phrase with almost 1 billion results. Especially since I wasn’t expecting to land in the top 10 in Google for several video site related phrases and attract a lot of people who aren’t the target of my blog content in general.

  29. Wow, great stuff here!

My most popular post for the last 3/4 of this year (since I began using Google Analytics) was Jumbo Shrimp and SUV Safety followed very closely behind by OLPC Teaches the Birds & Bees.

  30. My most popular post was about how to implement an effective GTD- system using LEAN principles.

I was a series of 6 posts called “LEAN GTD”

    http://poder.dk/lean-gtd/

Thans for a great blog, and happy new year!

    – Jens Poder

  31. My most popular post was a spoof about the imaginary Playstation 3 Emulator:

    http://future-phobia.blogspot.com/2007/03/playstation-3-emulator-in-glass-of.html

Rather disappointingly, the traffic hitting this page has far outweighed that of any other “serious” content of mine :(!

  32. Think I received more traffic to this article than others was because I posted links to it from some related User Groups and because so many people located in Northern NJ want these trails opened to Mountain Biking it peaked there interest enough to click on the link (I am a relatively new to blogging so topping 100 hits on a page in a day was big for me

  33. The most visited post when I first published it started out as a link for my non-TV watching readers about the Prof. Randy Pausch lecture video on ABC News. Professor’s final lecture: live boldly

I had no idea how big this was going to be (I wasn’t looking for a big kill at the time it was a service for some online friends) and an hour and half later couldn’t even get into my own blog it kept timing out.

True most were from Google Search and Technorati links, and merely clicked on the link for the video. However, a significant portion came back and read other pages so my visit length and page views jumped a bunch that week. Even now I get at least 4 views from searches for this content. No comments have ever been left though and that is probably because I’m seen as a medium to the person with whom they wish to connect.

  34. Creating a Special Needs Trust: http://www.mydollarplan.com/creating-a-special-needs-trust/

It was a niche article, but people really liked it.

  35. My most popular post was What’s the Point to Unlocking the iPhone?
Strangely enough, my second post was about the iPod touch. I guess that Steve Jobs even made me money this year.

  36. Engtech – I expect you meant http://internetducttape.com/2006/10/04/how-to-access-gmail-when-its-blocked-at-work-or-school/

    (i.e. without the extra .com!)

As long as your visitors can find you, that’s the main thing :)

  37. I record overheard conversations on my blog. My most popular post was about a young homeless girl filling up her van at a gas station. Besides hits and a couple stumbles, I was most amazed at the detailed comments left. They ran a range of emotions, mostly concern for the young girl and some even wanting to track down her identity and help.

  38. My response to a meme challenge seemed to touch a lot of people–Turning a Negative to Positive with Just a Thought http://www.lessonsfromarecoveringdoormat.com/2007/11/turning-negative-to-positive-with-just.html I heard from many more people by email than in comments, thanking me for opening up another door to the Law of Attraction for them. I think that it got a good response because almost everyone wants to know how to change a situation that seems unavoidable but is also undesirable. I gave several examples of how I refuse to accept what seems obvious and have attracted more positive alternatives.

  39. My blog is only 2 months old; but the most popular post so far has been “Vintage Inspired Aprons and Matching Glove Sets”.

    http://unleashedimagination.com/2007/11/05/vintageinspired-apron-and-matching-glove-sets.aspx

    Thanks!!

  40. I have stopped checking the blog stats often, but one of my most popular posts of 2007 brought thousands of additional visits to my blog and even some links from other websites. It still brings in some traffic, but this is not the best post that I think was written on my blog in my opinion. The post was based on celebrity gossip which was published by some larger news outlets to be true and ended up being a very bad rumor.

After observing the behavior of people involved in the story on various sides of the matter, I have decided not to publish on celebrity gossip or celebrity news so much unless it relates directly to the topic of my blog in some way. The celebrity news and gossip brings a lot of traffic and many big sites like Perez Hilton and TMZ have become famous off of such news and/or gossip, but being a part of the gossip crowd is not the direction that I want my blog to go in, no matter how much traffic it would bring.

If I choose to post on anything celebrity related in the future, it will be about something that relates to their profession in some manner and less about their personal lives.

  41. The one I did the other day about my predictions for 2008.

  42. Here’s the most popular blog post on [GAS] for the year:

Fox News Changes Wikipedia To Smear Rivals; Comprehensive List of Changes

    http://www.geeksaresexy.net/2007/08/14/fox-news-changes-wikipedia-to-smear-rivals-olbermann-and-franken-comprehensive-list-of-changes/

The article was pointed by some Times online journalist, MSNBC, and made it to the front page of most social networking sites.. It helped generate 100’s of backlinks to the blog.

  43. Well, I’m new to the blogging world and I’m not really up and running yet, but I’d guess that if I had been promoting my blog, then my most popular post would have been “Top 10 Reasons Not To Have A Job.”

    http://hunternuttall.com/blog/2007/12/02/top-10-reasons-not-to-have-a-job/

  44. Writing Lessons From Ernest Hemingway

Hemingway may not be in fashion these days, but everyone knows the old man could write with the very best of them.

  45. My most popular post of 2007 was a post about how to make ringtones for iPhone firmware 1.1.1 without hacking your phone:
