AdSense publishers who are logging into their AdSense accounts today will notice a new link in their Overview page – AdSense for Mobile – Get Started.
It seems that AdSense have just launched this new service which enables publishers with Mobile websites to monetize them.
To use it you need to have a page that is ‘mobile-compliant’ or the ads won’t display. More on this from the Google AdSense Help pages:
“If you don’t currently have a mobile website (and chances are, if you’re not sure, then you don’t have one), you can create one by rewriting your existing website in a mobile markup language, such as XHTML, WML, or CHTML. You’ll also need to make sure the layout of your website is properly formatted to display on mobile phones.
In addition, your mobile website will need to be developed using server-side scripting such as PHP or ASP. Many web hosting providers support PHP, and in many cases, you can PHP-enable your webpages simply by changing the file extension from .htm to .php. Thereafter you can paste the PHP code snippet into the section of the page where you want the AdSense for mobile ads to appear.”
Once you’ve got a mobile compliant website setting up the ads looks pretty simple – very similar to setting up ads for normal websites actually with a similar wizard to design ads. Ad units come in two sizes (single and double) – both are just text ads (pictured below).
Thanks to Michael for the heads up on this one.
Update: A few hours after we broke the news Google post their official announcement announcing AdSense for Mobile. Remember where you heard it first :-)
Update 2 – this release is only for publishers in some countries. These are included in the list – US, England, Germany, Spain, Ireland, France, Italy, Russia, Netherlands, China, Australia, India and Japan.
great to see that adsense is now looking towards publishers with Mobile websites…
I like the idea, but with mobile phones that can now browse full-on sites (take the iphone) will this become obsolute?? Obviously, it will take time so for now, it’s great to see.
That should be another nice feature. But I don’t think it will have a high conversion rate. Clicking ads on mobile phones? Sounds crazy.
I’d get on this if AdSense didn’t ban me three years ago for no reason! lol
AdSense for Mobile is not offered in Canada.

I just saw this earlier and I not convinced it’s a beneficial money maker. Generally speaking, I would agree with both Johan & Sly; (a) more advanced phones will be surfing the internet, not the mobile-net and (b) it sounds a little far fetched that conversion rates would be worth the real estate.
Wah..it is good for money makers from adsense…
I don’t think I am using it now…
thanx darren,
we still looking for the main reason why adsense is banding publishers
they say invalid clicks but no body know
thanx any way, adsense still the best
but very bad in disabling publishers accounts:P
Thanks Darren for the tip. Unluckily for me it hasn’t reached my location yet. LOL
I logged on to my account, i couldnt located it on the overview page. Out of curiosity i checked the adsense setup page and they had this in astericks
* We do not currently offer AdSense for Mobile in Ghana.
Ghana is Located in West Africa. I guess i would have to wait for a while till they make it available to us.
Thanks for the info though.
Does anyone use the alex king wordpress mobile plugin? I’d like to add it to this
It is especially beneficial in countries like India where internet access is mainly through Mobile. I am very happy. Thank you Google.
More and more of my clients are using mobile sites. Pretty soon, either all websites will be able to display normally on mobile phones… or they’ll all have mobile versions of themselves. Great post!
Thanks for the heads up Darren. I have an iPhone and a blog about the iPhone, and it would only make sense to make it monetized for people that are going to be accessing it with mobile devices. Mentioned earlier was the idea that iPhones have full website functionality and you can see ads well. This is true to some degree, but the iPhone does not currently support flash, and it is still hard to see on a small screen. Call me old, but it is easier to read a simple ad on the iPhone than the slightly more advanced regular ads. Thanks for your help.
Hi all,
I run a service that I think you’ll be interested in. FeedM8 (Feedmate in SMS lingo) turns your blog into a mobile website. You can increase your site’s reach and revenue all in one step. Hundreds of top sites like I4U.com, GossipGirls.com, Neatorama.com etc are already using FeedM8. We insert advertisements and share the revenue with the bloggers. We ensure the sites work on all the different phone models on the market. The service is free for both publishers and end-users.
You can find out more on our website (http://www.feedm8.com/web/learnmore).

Allen

Wow, this seems like it’s a bit late to the table. I had just decided a mobile website wasn’t really worth the trouble since quite a few mobile devices are coming out that do very well for browsing regular websites (and work just fine with regular Adsense ads).
WOW! Great….Good news to all the publishers that ad sense is using mobile websites. This will be beneficial to all the money makers and its very easy to create mobile website and once we get this it will be very simple to set up ads.
Great idea. Bravo Google!
At first when I saw that you listed cHTML, I was shocked. But the one I know isn’t public…
I just installed this plugin for wordpress, it allows you to configure your wordpress blog for mobile phones!

No country in this whole wide world is excluded.
I’ve been using the Feedm8 version for a while… it has a great affiliate program ;)
I can only read about this new service. I wish i could test it but have to wait cz my country is not listed in thier list.
can you use adsense mobile with feedm8?
You don’t have to use the alexking mobile plugin. Just add the Adsense mobile code in your theme. It worked on us. Read our tutorial “How to Format Your WordPress Blog for Google Adsense Mobile”
Bob,
Re: can you use adsense mobile with feedm8?
We don’t use adsense currently. We source ad inventory elsewhere.
Also, for those who are interested, we have posted an analysis of AdSense Mobile to FeedM8’s blog:

There is a lot of concern about mobile adsense and the ease with which click fraud can be committed.
Many of the usual methods of filtering click fraud such as monitoring for IP addresses are not avaiable from mobile devices.
An interesting article at the subject can be seen at

I do offer Free Mobile downloads and have a WAP section to transfer stuff from PC to mobiles.
I am using adsense for mobile and I did notice it has an ideal cost per click ;) I suppose its becuase less competition or may be any other reason
I have been trying to use adsense for mobile with one of my .mobi website, I am just not getting the ads on them. I have tried using different formats like XML, WML etc., and with PHP server script option. Hope one day I will succeed.
If someone can provide a step by step instruction for adding adsense code on a mobile website it will be helpful.
Thanks a lot.
Thanks Darren for hosting a place for discussing, and many thanks Allen for introducing one more tool for converting my Blog to a Mobile Blog. I’m learning how to use FeedM8 and how to earn money with FeedM8. Moreover, I know that with Mofuse you can make a Mobile Webste too. You can find more details by a post in my blog: http://easyadsensevn.blogspot.com/2008/09/get-your-mobile-blog-with-mofuse-and.html
