I was in the right place at the right time.

It was November 2002, and I received an email from a friend that changed my life in ways I could never have imagined.

Without receiving, reading, and taking action on that email, I would never have started blogging or built the business I have built.

I often reflect on this serendipitous start to the current chapter of my life – what would have happened if I’d not opened that email?

I feel lucky that I did… but was it just ‘luck’?

Earlier this year I was asked to travel to Boston to deliver a 12-minute ‘Bold Talk’ at Hubspot’s Inbound conference.

I loved the challenge of doing a shorter form presentation – particularly because I was invited to speak on something other than my normal topic (that of blogging).

I decided that the focus of my talk would be ‘luck’ in entrepreneurship. It definitely seems to play a part for many successful entrepreneurs but what is behind that luck?

In this short talk, I identify 7 habits of lucky entrepreneurs and challenge us all to make time to fit them into the way we live our lives.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this talk. Please let me know what habits you’d add to my 7 (I had another three that I would have included if I had had more time).

I’d also appreciate if you would consider sharing this presentation if you find it helpful!

  2. Darren, I loved that,so inspiring, thanks!
You are right, it’s knowledge, hard work and choices that get us ahead, there may be a grain of truth in the phrase “In the right place at the right time, but I actually think we create our own “luck” by previous choices, in our lives, that we have made.
I think of luck as : Being born in a free country, a country without war, or having inherited good DNA,, strong teeth, blue eyed and blonde, etc.
I especially like your habit of making appointments with yourself, and the couple of thoughts, before going to sleep every night, I shall deffo give those two a go!

    • Thanks Susan – we are lucky indeed :-)

    • We only make our luck up to a certain point.

When it comes to previous choices, it really all depends, doesn’t it? You could make a whole range of good choices and maybe only one or two of them will have mattered when opportunity comes knocking. And you really never know which way it will go.

When it comes to what we’re doing presently, the same applies, and I think what we’re doing presently is often more important than what we did in the past. It just so happens that past choices can be the foundation for present behaviors, which is why I mention past choices at all.

But there’s still that element of random chance. And you can’t discount the role of privilege in whether you are capable of being in the right place at the right time. My daughter has a gift for improv drama, according to her teacher, but without the necessary connections it is probably not going to ever be more than a hobby for her. We have a bit more advantage now than we would have had 20 years ago thanks to social media, but that may not be saying much.

And it’s ever so much worse when you were born dirt-poor and have spent your entire life up til now surviving. So many doors close so very early.

  3. Great story, I loved it

  4. Fantastic 12 minutes Darren, I can definitely identify with your 7 habits.
I will share this far and wide in the hope that it will help some of the people out there that are indeed stuck in a rut.

  5. Four months ago I quit my job and started a website. The going has been slow as far as getting an audience and I was wondering if I was cut out for this. However, your list describes me perfectly (except for the mentors which I think is a big part). Either way you have encouraged me to going. My dad recently told me to keep doing what I am doing and things will fall into place, your speech helped to make that a little more real! Thanks.

Love your lessons, message & humility! Thank you!

  7. Darren, what a powerful message you’ve delivered on that InBound conference. I have heard tons of habits entrepreneurs do, but yours was totally different in such a way that it doesn’t touch personalities a successful entrepreneur. Have i thought about those things before maybe i had change the course of my business. With that short talk, I can’t take it off my head, and is probably good to keep reminding me of what I have to develop myself in order to be called a “Lucky Entrepreneur”. My deepest thanks for sharing this wonderful article with a video clip. Definitely worth the time to watch and share!
