There is a great podcast over at View from the Isle – The Inaugral Business Blog Roundtable – on the topic of ‘how frequently should you post’ on your blog.
It think its a great idea for a Pocast – in a sense its taking the idea of niche blogging (one theme – Business Blogs) and breaking it down into niche topics (posting frequency) and really fleshing it out with some quality business bloggers and consultants.
This week’s participants are Tris Hussey, Toby Bloomberg, Stephan Spencer, Wayne Hurlbert and Paul Chaney – all of whom would be worth talking to one on one – but whom when you put their heads together spark some interesting conversation.
Here are a few paraphrased comments that stuck out to me as I listened in:
- Tris Hussey – has an editorial calendar to set targets/schedult of what he’s posting on which blog each day
- Wayne Hurlbert – recommends 3 posts per week as a starting schedule and once a rhythm is established up it to 4 or 5 times per week
- Stephan Spencer – too many posts can overwhelm your reader and create an unfocussed blog
- Toby Bloomberg – encourages clients to break up the length of the posts that they are doing – a short post one day, longer one the next
- Paul Chaney – How frequently do you want people to visit your blog? If its once a week – post once per week – if its every day post every day.
- Wayne Hurlbert – posts once per day but experimented with more than that and found his traffic doubled over night
- Stephan Spencer – series of posts are good but don’t break them up into too many short pieces because the Search Engines need more than a paragraph to index it properly (they decided that 250 or so is a good length for a post).
I’m sure there is more wisdom in it than that – but I’m only three quarters of the way through it and its time for bed! Will check out the rest later on. Well done Tris – great podcast – looking forward to more like this.
So what’s the answer? How often is often enough for posting on your blog?
a poll required here, on this perhaps?
My personal blog varies in frequency from once every 2 days to 3-4 or more times per day, but averages around two posts per day. Because it’s more personally focused, I think I get away with that, though I aim to write something every day to keep momentum. For my other blogs, I try to post every day, but I won’t post rubbish for the sake of it, so if it takes two days to post but the resulting post is of better quality, I’d rather do that.
My plan is to write more than one article per blog per day, when it’s not date-dependent, so that I can build up a buffer of articles if writers block hits me for a few days. I’m not quite there yet.
Great article and responses. As someone who has a 2 week old blog, it’s fasincating to see these kinds of topics being discussed just when I was pondering them myself.
I agree that a quality post is worlds better than a rubbish one, but then I was thinking, maybe a post about a product announcement or a shorter blurb everyday would be good? With a major piece to follow every 2-3 days?
For my blogs that rely on SE traffic almost entirely, I felt it good to post as often as possible for the first two weeks. After I got 40-70 posts in the site I have enough entry points to start thinking about developing regular readership.
Darren – I enjoy reading your blog – it’s on “My Yahoo!” home page.
My marketing blog is a combination of free-to-publish articles and original material (lately, more articles than original). I try to post a minimum once a day Mon.-Fri. ; weekends are hit-or-miss on posting.
Keep it up –
Interesting article. I try to post once a day, 6-7 days a week. Since many of the posts are article type, when I get in the writing mood I may write 3-4 in one day and schedule them ahead of time, particularly over the weekends.
A resent trip to visit a relative took me to the wilds of northern Minnesota where internet access was mostly non-existent, resulted in only one post in a 10 day period. When I got back there were quite a few “what happened” emails from readers, but I don’t know who suffered the most – them or me. Could it be I’m addicted?
Thanks for the ping Darren! Myself I’m on something like four posts today over two blogs, and I’ll wrap up with at least 6-8 more over another 3-4. But, that is the life of a ProBlogger! Hey, did you like the music?
I usually post everyday other than weekends but sometimes if I miss a day during the weekdays, my adsense earnings goes up.
good read. definetely something to consider especially if you’re blogging about a more focused topic. cause you’d never know when you might run out of it and endanger yourself in repeating some topics. :)
[…] . 12 posts per day is a pretty high posting rate for a blog. We’ve had the ‘how frequently should you post‘ debate here from time to time […]
