Here are a few links that caught my eye over the last week. I hope something in them inspires, teaches, motivates, informs or connect with you:
- Scott Karp writes a fascinating post on how Drudge Report (a site that links out a lot) has a higher reader engagement level than other sites who link out less.
- Shoemoney shares how to get advertisers or sponsors for your website.
- The Amazon Associates Program has introduced Amazon Video On Demand as a product to promote. You can earn 10% of the cost of movies and TV shows that people download.
- Ducan Riley shares some thoughts on how to find your niche and knowing your blogging goals.
- WordPress 2.6.2 is out and it closes an exploit in previous versions.
- Jonathan Bailey shares where he gets post ideas.
- Jim shares some of the process that he went through in his thinking before he went ‘Pro’ as a blogger.
Linking to other people’s blog posts has always been a good way to get other bloggers to come to your site. Why would it be good to get bloggers to come to your site? Well, then they know about your blog and they probably will come back again. If you are a normal blogger, you like to read a lot of blogs. The best thing is that they might even link back to you in their blog posts. This could give you quite a bit of traffic from their readers and subscribers.
Linking to other sites creates a deeper experience for your readers. A great piece of advise I got from http://www.dailyblogtips.com/ in one of the articles was to link to other websites but DO NOT open the link in a new window. If the reader wants to come back, he or she always will but let the reader decide. These are some great articles. Thanks Darren.
Once a week, I publish a “weekly roundup” of 5 to 10 of the best sites I found that week, or pages that made me think, or people I got to know in different social networks.
I rarely link to people and their pages “just because,” but as the result of interactive comments and respect.
Thanks for sharing these links with us Darren. It isn’t often I see you linking to other blogs/websites. Im sure many blogs would appreciate it if they could be featured in your link love…
Anyway I will check out the links today because I am looking for some more blogs to subscribe to.
Thanks for the heads up on the amazon video program – must have missed that in my associates email.
The WordPress upgrade is a little late new but definitely important – the exploit could potentially let someone take over your site.
Loved Jim’s zero to hero problogging story too =)
Your blog makes me really appreciate RSS feeds, I love the blueprint blog by Jake and the inquisitor anyone starting a blog needs to see this see these blogs.
Thanks again Darren,
-Tabs
thanks for posting the shoemoney article! Was considering site advertising for quite a while, and I got some great ideas here.
+1 on the dailyblogtips.com link from Gary above!
I like Duncan’s point on finding your niche.
One of my mentors had a little catch phrase — “think of it as … defending your niche.”
Thanks for the links and suggestions Darren. I’ve found most of hte links above useful.
Would you say that linking to other sites should be done at the end of the week, or on the weekend?
I had a client that I made a “Drudge Report Like” website for once. They are a football coaching clinic and wanted a site where their clients could find the latest football news.
When I was building the site I was amazed at how well the Drudge Report did considering how simple the concept is.
Thanks for pointing out the article it looks to be an interesting read.

“Finding your niche…” Came just on time for me. Thanks for posting that article.
Thanks again for the useful information Darren. Your tips have really helped me to familiarize myself with many aspects of blogging!
I’m always a slow adopter when it comes to adding new things from Amazon, even though I make several hundred a month from them. I tend to stick with the tried and true text links, heh.
Have you (or has anyone here) tried out the video stuff yet, and if so, any great results?
Timely list for all of us out here learning the basics. Thanks.
Great list, the Shoemoney link was a good one.
Thanks!
Hi Darren
Of the links you’ve posted up, I think I’m just about curious about checking out all of them, particularly the one about WordPress 2.6.2 and how to garner sponsors for a site. Oh, yeah, and the one Jim wrote, too! (actually, I plan to read his first).
Thanks for the links. Appreciated.
Have a good weekend.
thats a cool list for a beginner like me . .thanks a lot. .looking for more. on link building strategies and driving organic traffic to the blogs
I have a question about blogs, for Darren or anyone else. I just started my blog a few days ago and am trying to do whatever I can to build traffic…
is it good blog etiquette to message a blogger whose blog I like and ask them to put a link to my blog in exchange of me putting a link to theirs?
I did the pinging thing and registered to a couple blog search engines… any other advice of things I can do? Thanks in advance
