The Official Google Blog was unavailable a couple of days back. This sent loads of rumors around that perhaps Blogger.com had been hacked. The real story was that they deleted their own blog.
If Google can do it – anyone can.
Do you have a blog backup strategy?
Update – Dave Walker put together a cartoon to commemorate the moment :-)

I wonder if the Google engineer’s next trick will be deleting the Google Search database. :)
Oops… there goes the internet. :p
Aaron, someone beat you to it:
Ach. Could you please delete the above comment (and this one). Didn’t come out
This is too funny… just goes to show even Google has humans working behind all the technology!
Wow.
I think that this very ‘un-google’ act of imperfection has made me like the company even more.
There is a screenshot here of the page, the conversation on the page is fake I think…

Makes the playing field feel a tad more level, eh?
Squarespace offers the ability to backup all blog (“journal” in ss terminology) files as often as we like. This was a good reminder that it’s been a while…
Thanks for the coverage Big D.
I’m amazed the Blogger who put up the notice did not place AdSense or YPN ads all over the place.
Scary – although it is a good reminder to use backups. I normally try to backup both of my blogs every few weeks, just in case I either goof up or have to deal with hackers.
That was hilarious. Some kid registered the name and had his own blog there for half a day.
I really not surprise… it happened to me also, i accidentally deleted on of my blogger blog.
When u want to delete one WordPress blog, you need to confirm few step and finalyze an e mail comfirmation.
In Blogger, on the dashboard there is just oen icone to click, and your blog is gone in the second. No confirmation, no possiblity to retract you rchoice, nothing.
Matter of fact the “delete this blog” icone is just near the one to save the globbal settings”.
It’s funny that it seems quite easy to delete a blog by mistake and yet I have tried out 3 different blogging scripts over the last week or so and yet I cannot delete the ones I decided not to use either from the database or from my webspace. Oh well maybe I will contact the guy at Google and ask him how he did it ;)
..and right when complaints about blogger.com blogs deleted without warning seemed to reach their peak.. Google confirmed :)
Oh, the irony
Being a long time blogspot user myself, once you delete the blogger account, everything is gone – posts, template… I still wonder how they got it all back with full archives so quickly. I have some tips to back up blogger blogs.
I remember myself when I was using blogger, I was surprised to see a big button “Delete blog” in the middle of the page. Perhaps they will now make it harder to delete your blog. An email confirmation or something is probably a good idea.
Scott Young: Makes you like them more?! Would love to see that standard applied to Microsoft. I guess you can join the mob licking Google’s (and Apple’s) boots and cursing Microsoft. Whatever.
p.s. Any company that perpetuates the use of that god-forsaken “my bad” (in this case, “our bad,” guhhh) phrase should be shut down!
In case you wouldn’t have a backup strategy, I just wrote an article on this topic:
