Current Opening: December 2021 Short Term Contract Position (With Potential for Regular Work in 2022)
We have an immediate need for writers who can deliver a package of 4-6 long-form articles, totaling roughly 10,000-15,000 words, before the end of December 2021. The articles will all revolve around the same destination (ideally, the place where you are a local). Article topics will be given to you and will be on subjects such as things to do at the destination, where to go, etc.
Writers who successfully complete the contract will be eligible for consideration to join our team of recurring freelance travel writers in 2022 if desired. Our regular contributors typically produce a steady flow of between 2 and 8 articles per month.
Currently, we are only looking for candidates who have deep local knowledge about a city or travel destination located in the following:
- The United States
- Canada
- Mexico
What Our Writers Do
We write concise, friendly, and highly-informative “guidebook style” blog posts around subjects like things to do in a city, the best day trips, the best hotels, etc. Our goal at Travel Lemming is to build the most helpful online travel resource on the internet, with candid advice from knowledgeable locals and expert travelers. Writers write under their own byline.

What We Are Looking For
Local Expertise – We prefer our guides to be written by an area local, or at least someone who has spent a lot of time in the destination and knows it very well. This could be your hometown or where you live now – even if it’s just a small city. The important thing is that you should be able to easily demonstrate deep knowledge about that destination's tourism scene.
Attention to Detail – Our writers must closely follow instructions. We have detailed standard operating procedures, and you will need to carefully follow specific topic outlines and templates. We also take fact-checking and research extremely seriously. This is very important, so you should include the name of the capital of Bolivia in your application form somewhere so that we know you read and digested this important requirement.
Quality Writing – You do NOT need experience in travel writing. We will train you on our specific methods of producing content, even if you do have experience. The important thing is that you are able to demonstrate that you can write clear, concise, fluff-free text.
Photos – Although not required, it’s also a huge bonus if you take your own photos of the places you’re writing about (we’ll pay for a license)!
Compensation
We pay 5 cents a word for new writers. Additionally, you can make bonus money by licensing your existing library of original photos to us (they don't need to be professional shots, well-composed smartphone photos are just fine). This is a freelance/independent contractor (1099) position. We pay all invoices very promptly.
