The blogging toolkit

Posted By Darren Rowse 28th of September 2005 Blogging Tools and Services 0 Comments

Phil at Geeky Info (one of my favorite blogs of late) has an interesting post titled the blogging toolkit where he asks readers to come up with a list of software tools that they use in their blogging workflow:

‘So, I started thinking about the software tools that I use for blogging. I thought I would share them with you and see if anyone had some other suggestions of software tools that help them blog. Your list does not need to be the tools that you would never give up, even if you were on a desert island type scenario but just what you find useful – even if you use the tool only occasionally for blogging.’

Interesting topic – I’m looking forward to seeing what people write. Head over to Geeky Info to leave your list of blogging tools.

  1. Great list of tools on the GeekyInfo website. Its a great idea to list tools that people use to run their blogs. I can really learn a lot from those of you with successful blogs.

  2. vi
    grep

    :-)

    Well, those are MY tools..

  3. Whenever I see posts or lists like this one on blogger toolkits, it’s always all Mac and Windows users. Surely there are some pro-bloggers other than myself who work in Linux? Anybody?

  4. “vi
    grep”

LOL. The blogoshpere would shrink by about 99% if the rest of us had to use the command line. You should have a link for http://home.arachne.cz/ on your site.

  5. Kevin,

I am a linux blogger myself. You can look on my site for some useful linux tools and tips. There are more geared towards new linux users.

  6. linux blogger:

Several of my sites are Linux based, one is BSD, but I do mostly use a Mac for my desktop box. But that doesn’t matter: when I’m, working on the sites, I’m logged in at the command line on the site. So yes, I’m a Linux blogger too.

But that’s why I mentioned vi and grep. Now, really, Perl is driving most everything, but I write the perl, so that’s why I still say that vi and grep are my main tools.

As to 99% of the blogosphere disappearing if you had to use vi, maybe so, but I have many thousands of articles, write at least 30 posts weekly, and it only takes me an hour or so per day.. I don’t feel hampered.. but then again, you probably have no real idea what someone skilled with vi (or emacs) can do – aside from raw typing speed, I can probably do more complex thiings far more quickly than you can with any fancy tool.

  7. I think w.bloggar is a tool I can’t live without when it comes to blogging.

Much like blogjet but supports more blog platforms and best of all is free.

  8. This is a great post from the geeky info site! Good find, Darren, and thanks for sharing!

  9. Thanks for the link up Darren.

I am sorry for the windows bent of the tools. I should have declared that as the operating system that I use :)

Some people are doing their own lists – so as more people publish their lists or pop it in the comments – I will repost and this time have categories of windows, mac, and linux

    Cheers

  10. I have several TypePad blogs, and the reason I actually pay for blogging software is simple: I’ve done the self-admin route before and I spent a ton of time futzing with layout, design, code, etc.

With all the time I’ve saved I posted 942 stories. Content is what this is really about, right?

Sure it costs about $12 per month, but it lets me focus on writing, not playing sysadmin.
