About Us & the Work

We’re looking for writers, pet owners, and pet care professionals with a passion for all creatures in the animal kingdom to write engaging and helpful blog posts on a variety of topics. From saltwater aquariums to cat furniture, our content is cyclical yet evolving—we might be writing about dogs, guinea pigs, and horses this week, and cats and chickens the next. Many of our top writers are superstar generalists who can write about almost anything with style and finesse. We’re looking to add 3-5 new writers to our existing team.

Above all, we’re focused on creating awesome content that helps our readers make informed decisions and improve the pet ownership experience—for pets and owners alike. Our mission is to become the leading pet care authority on the internet.

This is a great opportunity if you’re interested in one or more of the following:

Helping people and pets: We strive to answer questions before people have the need to ask them. The majority of our team is comprised of fellow pet owners—including yours truly. We’re dedicated to promoting and nurturing the benefits of loving and responsible pet ownership, leading to a happy and healthy bond with your pet.

Advancing your career with a byline: You’ll get credit for your work—if you want it. Ghostwriting is OK, too. It’s your choice. (Note: Bylines are established after you’ve been on the team for a couple of deadlines.)

Consistent work: Assignments are distributed weekly, and we have two weekly deadlines. We generate the topics, you write them. Our writers dictate their word counts. We do our best to assign only as much writing that you can handle in a week.

What’s in It for You?

Competitive and timely pay: The rates are fair for pet care blog writing, and you get paid every week. We give raises based on performance and longevity, and certain articles carry a modest research bonus.

Editorial support and writing resources: We have a comprehensive yet easy-to-digest set of guidelines for writing and submitting your work, and also provide a simple invoice template for getting paid. You’ll be placed on a team with an assigned editor who will be your main point of contact for questions, concerns, or requests.

Job security: Many of our current writers have been with us for over a year – proof that our consistency is key. But it also indicates another, possibly more important point: we’re very easy to work with. Our editorial team cares about the work. We go out of our way to avoid asking for revisions from writers – if we can help it.

Required

You have great writing skills and the mental flexibility and curiosity to write about a wide range of topics. Don’t worry, it’s blog writing. We don’t require massive amounts of research or SEO keyword stuffing. Our articles range from 600-3,500 words or more, including listicles, how-tos, product reviews, and answering frequently asked questions.

Familiarity with the basics of remote freelance writing work, e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Drive. We also strongly encourage writers to run their work through the free version of Grammarly (or the Premium version, if you have it) before submitting their work—it’s basically a requirement.

Even though you don’t have to be a native English speaker to participate in our paid trial article program, we’ll figure it out if you’re not. We won’t say “Native English Writers Only” because there are exceptions to rules and we’ve hired writers who aren’t native. Most of our writers are native English speakers.

Not Required

Professional writing experience. Some of our best writers had never been published before joining our team. Their passion and enthusiasm for the work more than made up for the lack of experience.

A specific location. We’re a 100% remote company with team members scattered around the globe. We don’t care where you live. However, and this is a huge ‘however’, you MUST be familiar with and skilled in writing for North American readers. That means proper use of colloquial terms and units of measurement.

It would be awesome if...

  • You have access to a camera and possess some basic photography skills (we pay extra for that, of course!)
  • You are willing and able to have products shipped to you for hands-on testing and reviewing (free stuff!)
  • You own the stuff you'll be writing about (not a requirement)

Applying for the Position(s)

Please fill out the application form. If we think you’re a good match for us, we’ll be in touch. From there, we'll arrange a brief text interview via Skype, Zoom, or email.

What happens next?

We’ll ask you to complete a paid trial assignment (typically 600-1800 words).

Once the trial is complete, we’ll make a decision. If we decide to work together, the articles will start flowing.

Just being selected for the trial is an achievement in itself. That means we think you’ve got what it takes. However, competition for these gigs can be fierce.

  • Even if we don’t decide to bring you onboard at this time, we’ll keep your application in our database for contact in the future. We have several writers who joined the team after a second look.

Don't wait, apply now

We generally go through the applications as they come in; however, a large number of applicants won't be considered. The bottom line is the sooner you apply, the better your chances of an invitation to interview.

Watch out for our tripwire to see if you’ve read the whole post!

At the end of the application form, you’ll be asked a question: “Is there anything else about the job posting you might want to add here?”

Please answer the following question:

Which planet in our solar system is closest to the sun?

Thanks! We look forward to hearing from you.
