Description

Are you passionate about getting outdoors? Hiking? Backpacking, trekking the mountains, thru-hiking?

We’re looking for freelance writers, any location, for ongoing work writing informational articles and gear review content for a website dedicated to hiking, backpacking, and camping.

You don’t have to be an outdoor professional or someone who spends every waking hour either on the trail or on a hiking forum; but you do need to have an interest and experience with outdoor gear, camping, and hiking in general.

We’re looking for writers for the long-term, to provide anything between 4-10,000 words spread over about 2-5 articles of high-quality writing per month - depending on your availability and our needs at any given time. If you have greater capacity and we like your writing, we might be able to give you more.

This is not a content agency listing, you will be dealing directly with the website owner or editor. Content mill/agencies need not apply - we wish to work with writers directly.

What we will need from you:

  • Very good written English. English is your first language.
  • To write with a confident voice, a sense of humor and an ability to educate and entertain readers with fun, but very informative content. Wafflers need not apply.
  • The ability to combine your excellent online research skills and attention to detail in crafting highly accurate, information-rich, engaging articles usually between 1,500-2,500 words, though sometimes up to 5-6,000 words.
  • Note: You will be expected to link to any information sources that you use in your research, to back up your claims and to give credit where it is due.
  • The ability to use headings, bullet points, and other formatting to make the article easy to read and scannable
  • The ability to work to a deadline, follow the brief and make changes to the article based on feedback.

With all that said… if you are an outdoor professional or an enthusiast that has huge, encyclopedic, first-hand knowledge of outdoor gear, and have spent more of your time on the trail than you’ve ever spent on your computer… we might forgive you some writing skills if your knowledge is seriously on-point.

What we absolutely don’t want:

  • Low-quality articles, anything that screams “SEO” (words such as: "listicles", "expert roundups", "click-bait" etc)
  • Anyone who uses plagiarism as their business model or those for whom grammar is a swear-word.

The articles we will require fall broadly into two categories:

  • Informational: “how to”, “why”, “what to” articles that may be long, instructional guides or shorter, more “answer-the-question” type.
  • Gear reviews and buyer’s guides: where we talk the reader through what to look for when purchasing a product and recommending products for different needs. (for example “best running shoes for over-pronation”).

Other points to note:

  • We will pay a rate per word, via Paypal or Payoneer
  • We prefer ghostwritten work, although we are open to accepting work published in your own name if you have the relevant experience/authority in the field.

With this in mind…

  • We will own the exclusive rights to any content, it must not be shared, published or appear anywhere else either in print or online.
  • If we agree between us that we will publish the article in your name, then we agree not to alter the content without your express permission.

How To Apply

If you’ve got this far, actually read this advert, and would like to apply, we’d love to hear from you:

  • Please send an email to [email protected] with the subject line “Love Hiking - Will Write” (this is to filter out automated replies!)
  • Include 3-5 links to relevant articles you’ve written (can be any topic, but best if it’s hiking/outdoor/backpacking focused)
  • Why you would like to write for us, what you experience is with the topic and why you think you could be just what we are looking for
  • How much you expect to be paid per word, and how many words per month would be ideal for you
  • Whether you are happy with ghostwriting or prefer to be published in your own name, and if the latter, please explain why
  • Any questions or further information you would like from us.

I look forward to hearing from you.
