Description

Are you on team Amazon Alexa or Google Home? Do you geek out about the latest smart appliances or home security cameras? Do you peruse Indiegogo for the latest smart home inventions? If so, then you might be the right fit as a smart home writer for Digital Trends.

We're seeking freelance writers with a love of consumer tech and gadgetry. This is a daily gig (telecommute unless you live in NYC or Portland, OR and want to come into the office), and we'd like it to become a consistent, long-term working relationship if we're satisfied with your work.

Right now, we're hunting for a writer to contribute to our home tech section. We’re looking for writers who can tackle news, features, and down the line, reviews, on subjects like the latest video doorbell launches, how to buy a dishwasher, the best smart locks, or gadgets for growing an indoor garden. If chosen, you will write helpful articles of all types, including news posts on all things Amazon Alexa related, how-to guides, rumor roundups, and fun articles for our readers on social media channels like Twitter. The ability to research, source, and find the best advice or products for every situation is a must.

The ideal candidate already has considerable experience writing and fact checking online, consistent time each day to write at least one post, and the drive to dive into creating publishable content with minimal training. The ability to turn around airtight copy quickly and reliably while using excellent editorial judgment is crucial.

As part of your posts, you will find and secure relevant images, video, and other media to draw readers in and keep them there. Your sources will include media from manufacturers, official releases, stock photography, and more.

In time, a solid candidate may also earn the option to do live reporting, review products, and contribute regular articles / columns based on hot topics. Compensation starts at $35 per news article and goes up to as much as $100 for features, buying guides, or how-to posts, depending on the amount of research and time involved.

Please provide the following to apply:

  • Cover letter with the following info: your background, your areas of interest/experience in tech, and your availability.
  • Resume with relevant tech writing or journalism experience.
  • Writing samples: Send 3 published clips of your writing.
  • Other relevant links: Add a link to your LinkedIn profile or your portfolio.

In lieu of published clips, you may also choose to write the following assignment: Write up a list of 5 tips and tricks on how to make the most of your Philips Hue light bulbs. It should be something like this: https://www.digitaltrends.com/home/amazon-echo-tips-and-tricks/

***Do not apply unless you have experience writing about tech gadgets and can write a couple of hours each week day. You must know how to fact check, create basic header images for a story, and be self-driven to start new projects.
