DRK Beauty Freelance Writers Guide
About DRK Beauty
DRK Beauty is a beauty, fashion and lifestyle destination for people of color where community is at the heart of everything we do. We aim to bring a fresh approach to content and community.
DRK Beauty recognizeS that the relationship between brands, influencers, and consumers of color is flawed. DRK Beauty aims to fix this through an innovative approach to community, content, and commerce which will reveal itself gradually over the course of 2020.
Our Vision and Content Strategy for DRK Beauty
We aim to make DRK Beauty THE destination for people of color to go to for their beauty, fashion and lifestyle content as well as community.
Our target audience is mainly women and LGBTQ+ of African and Latin descent aged 25-34, with a view to becoming more multi-cultural over time.
When co-founders Danielle Jackson and Wilma Mae looked at other publications for people of color in this space, they discovered that there is no easily searchable repository of useful, helpful content when it comes to beauty, fashion & lifestyle for women of color. DRK Beauty’s aim is to differentiate from the rest and redefine the genre completely.
It is early days for DRK Beauty. We are establishing our tone of voice and style. We are looking to work with several experienced and talented freelance writers to help us establish our unique tone of voice through well-written, well-researched articles that are both SEO friendly and different to the glut of click-bait articles that pervade the internet. We are looking to differentiate ourselves at every touchpoint of the user journey.
Are you the writer to help us do that?

You are an experienced writer with at least 5 years of professional content/journalistic writing under your belt and have a passion for storytelling and factually informative articles. We’re looking for someone who is hungry to write with more depth and substance than the norm. We want to work with writers who have experience in traditional women’s publications but who crave to do it differently. You are adept at devising story concepts with minimal guidance.
We prefer a writer who is NYC based as we would ideally like to meet them in person and occasionally invite them to brainstorm with our team. We will consider US-based writers only for the time being.
- PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU SUBMIT A RESUME WITH PREVIOUS WRITING EXAMPLES AND A COVER LETTER. NO RESUME, NO COVER LETTER, AND NO WRITING EXAMPLES = REJECTION.
- GRAMMATICAL ERRORS AND SPELLING MISTAKES = REJECTION
After reading through everything above, here is the exercise that you’ll need to complete to become one of our regular contributors.
Pitch us three story headlines that you’d potentially like to write, based on what you’ve read here.
If the headlines fit within our content buckets and we like them, we will ask you to write one of the stories.
After we review your written piece and if we like it, we will pay you for the post and publish it on our blog. We will then invite you to become a regular contributor. If it doesn’t meet our standards, we will not use it, and you’ll have full rights to the post.
Please remember that in order to be considered, you will need to submit your resume and a cover letter before being considered. Your application will be immediately rejected if it does not include these elements or has grammatical and/or spelling errors.
