Job Description

We are looking for an assistant editor to join the HotDog.com team. You will be helping our editorial team maintain and update our website, making sure everything works, every link directs to the right page, and every price displayed is up to date.

This position involves a lot of editing inside the WordPress CMS so knowledge of it is essential. We are looking for someone with Editor level experience, who is able to create, edit (using Gutenberg blocks) and publish documents. You will be adding images and subtitles to the website, naming pages and properly structuring content, updating meta descriptions, authors and using HTML blocks. This is not a coding position, so you will need to be very comfortable with WordPress as an editor, not as a developer.

It also involves research to determine authoritative sources of information about streaming service plans, sporting event schedules, and so on.

Task Examples

  • Sling TV has changed the details of its base plan. You would go through a list of pages and update the relevant information.
  • The Africa Cup of Nations has announced the schedule for its next event. You would find a trusted source for the information, and update the appropriate page(s).
  • The NFL Conference finals are over. You would input the scores and update the pages to reflect the teams that will play in the Super Bowl.
  • Read a new page about BBC America and make sure it displays correctly and that all links work.
  • Search site for references to "BBC America" and place links in those pages to the new BBC America page.

About us

HotDog.com is a website that provides information for cord-cutters -- people who are abandoning cable and satellite TV. Most of our content deals with streaming services like Disney+ and Sling TV. But we also discuss antennas and related technologies. And we write a lot about what is on TV -- especially sports.

You will have the opportunity to join a team working remotely for more than 10 years, across 8 different countries. Over the last decade working remotely, we’ve developed unique processes, systems and ways of working that help us get things done (both on time and of the quality we expect of ourselves).

We use a few popular tools you may have used before:-

  • Slack, for teamwork and day-to-day chat
  • Google Docs/Google Sheets for collaborative documents
  • WordPress to power our sites
  • Trello to keep organised and meet deadlines

  • Native English speaker or bilingual English (we work in US English, you can be based anywhere).
  • Strong WordPress skills with a focus on updating pages.
  • Online research skills (ie, trending sports events facts, when was the last time the Bengals were in the Super Bowl, what year did The Bachelor premiere, new tournaments playing as a special occasion)
  • Accurate data entry
  • Fact-checking skills

Requirements for everyone joining our team:

  • Excellent communicator (remote work is otherwise impossible)
  • Willing to follow instructions (eg, how to invoice correctly)
  • Happy working solo (ie, without micromanaging or nagging)
  • Well organized (ie, deadlines get met, without excuses or exceptions)
  • Rock steady reliable – your word is your bond
  • Will work our way – it will differ from your past experience
  • Introverts will thrive in our team (we do have the odd extrovert too)

Pay & Workload

We pay well/fast, and presently have as much work as you can handle.

Rates vary in line with your commitment. You will get paid monthly in US dollars (by wire transfer).

We are looking for a commitment of 32-40 hours/week. There are no set hours, and you can work when you choose in any time zone and in any location – provided you meet deadlines. Did we mention how important delivering to deadline is…?

We don’t micro-manage; you will be expected to meet deadlines without exception, and without us hassling you.

Sound like a good fit?

We’d love to hear from you!

We’ve set up a quick typeform survey to collect your details and resume - it should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.
