What Our Writers Do
We write concise, friendly, and highly-informative “guidebook style” blog posts around subjects like things to do in a city, the best day trips, the best restaurants, the best neighborhoods, etc.
Our goal at Travel Lemming is to build the most helpful online travel resource on the internet, with candid advice from knowledgeable locals and expert travelers.
Writers write under their own byline.
Why You’ll Love Writing for Travel Lemming
Travel writing is fun! We are perfectionists when it comes to our content, but we are a small team and are pretty laid back and fun to work with. Thousands of readers will use your guides to plan their trips, and it’s a really special feeling to know that you’re helping others travel better!
We are a good fit for writers looking for a reliable client to provide a sustained and steady stream of work each month.
We try hard to invest in our writer's professional development through training, support, and advancement opportunities. When we have internal openings, we try to promote from within. All of our editorial team started as freelance writers! Additionally, our experienced writers are often given optional additional content creation opportunities, such as the chance to make video guides. We have a very high retention rate because we work hard to be your most supportive, most fun, and most responsive client.
What We Are Looking For
Local Expertise – We prefer our guides to be written by an area local, or at least someone who has spent a lot of time in the destination and knows it very well. This is likely where you live now – even if it’s just a small city. The important thing is that you should be able to easily demonstrate deep knowledge about that destination's tourism scene from top to bottom.
Consistent Production - We need writers who can commit to produce at least 10,000 high quality words per month (typically this will be 4-5 articles, depending upon length).
Attention to Detail – Our writers must closely follow instructions. We have very long and detailed standard operating procedures. Do not apply if you are not comfortable taking the time to learn them. You will need to carefully follow specific topic outlines and templates. We also take fact-checking and research extremely seriously. This is very important, so you should include the name of the capital of Bolivia in your application form somewhere so that we know you read and digested this important requirement.
Quality Writing – You do NOT need experience in travel writing. We will train you on our specific methods of producing content, even if you do have experience. The important thing is that you are able to demonstrate that you can write clear, concise, fluff-free text.
Original Photos – We really like it if you have at least a few photos of the places you’re writing about (we’ll pay for a license)! We also like it if you appear in a few of those photos yourself.
Compensation
We pay 5-6 cents a word for new writers starting out, and our scale increases progressively the more you write for us (up to 8 cents per word).
Additionally, you can make bonus money by licensing your existing library of original photos to us (they don't need to be professional shots, well-composed smartphone photos are just fine).
This is a freelance/independent contractor (1099) position.
We pay all invoices very promptly. Writers have the option to elect to bill once or twice per month.
