Description
Overview
My name is Eric, and I am hoping to land a few more freelance ghostwriters for my well-established recreational fishing website.
Writers will produce 500-1,500 words per article as assigned, primarily about fishing locations but potentially other fishing topics. This is not marketing or sales, it’s a trusted online guidebook.
Payment
5 cents/word upon acceptance*. I’ve been paying contributors mostly with PayPal or Wise (Transferwise) but would consider other payment methods.
About You
You are a native English speaker/writer, preferably from the U.S. (I have a 99% U.S. readership.) You are an accurate researcher who uses a variety of sources. You can write with straight-forward language, maybe with just a bit of fun, but mostly informational in tone.
You aren’t necessarily out fishing every weekend but you do know your way around the sport well enough to figure out what you’re researching and writing. If you are a high-level angler/writer, there may be additional opportunities.*
The Details
After writers learn the ropes with shorter assignments, and I am confident in their ability to produce content for my website, I will assign articles in clusters totaling 2,000 to 5,000+ words. For example, a common assignment length might be 700-1,000 words per article, and I am likely to assign a group of 4-6 articles and give you a few weeks to finish them.
I pay immediately once I have accepted the assignment group. Edits may be requested as necessary prior to acceptance, but as you learn my editorial needs, these tend to be few in number and/or small in scope.
This is a flexible freelance gig. You can write 3-4 articles for me in several days and then none for several weeks, or something in between. If you are enthusiastically producing great content and I have the available assignments, I’ll work with your schedule. (There is some seasonality to my work flow, but I publish year-round.)
For excellent writers who are looking for more work, I may offer new assignments quickly after I pay for the previous assignment cluster, based on my needs. I’ll trust you to manage your deadlines as long as they are within reason (usually weeks, not months).
*A few of my current freelance writers are avid anglers who produce outstanding, longer-form content for me. I pay them higher rates. If you prove to be a really good fishing writer, some higher-level assignments may be available in the future.
Application Process
My plan is to try out promising applicants with a paid assignment of under 1,000 words. You may have to do some rewrites to get there, but once it’s acceptable to my standards, I will pay you 5 cents/word. If you seem like a great fit, more will follow.
I may assign the first few tryout articles as early as July 12, so if you are in a position to apply by this Friday (July 9), go for it. If you can’t apply that quickly but you’ll knock my waders off with how great a fit you are, please apply later for my consideration.
Here’s how you get to that first assignment...
Send a message to eric (at) bestfishinginamerica.com that does all of the following while giving me a sense of your writing style:
- Has “Fishing Writer - (Your Name)” in the subject line
- Introduces yourself
- Tells me why this job interests you
- Briefly describes your writing experience
- Briefly describes your level of fishing experience/knowledge, including what types of fishing you have done (if any). Are there types of fishing you’d be most comfortable writing about? (I can’t guarantee this will match my needs.)
- Briefly tells me about your favorite fishing memory (or at least tells me if one doesn’t come to mind)
- Links to 2-3 individual articles you have written or to a Google Doc/portfolio with your writing samples. If you are providing many samples, which 2-3 should I read?
