- Differentiate characters through rhythm and word choice, not dialect or verbal tics
- Write a young female protagonist in close third with a distinctive voice — smart, dry, self-aware, never quipping to prove she's the smartest in the room
- Handle plot logic across a book-length mystery-adventure arc
